(If I have posted this in the wrong place please forgive me!!)

My XP was purpose built for me by a pal a couple of years ago and I've had no problems whatsoever.
Nero7 full and Cyberlink DVD Suite 5 (not activated) were already installed.
I used Nero 7 and XP's Cd Writing Wizard (by Roxio) to save my work.

To put it simply, my cd drive doesnt work any more!
It reads some discs no bother, doesn't burn as it used to.
Shows as empty. I can here a noise coming from the drive like it's trying to read the disc but it just keeps doing it. A wee disc flashes near the cursor as it does so.
It does not want to burn/write/record, whatever you call it. It's even fussy about what it plays/opens!
I often dont even get the 'right-click/open with' option - it just freezes until I open the drawer and end task.

Here's some info which may help. Not quite sure about tech lingo so I'm just spelling out what I see in front of me! Here goes..

    Logos on the cd drawer...
    DVD-ROM - Dvd multi-recorder
    CD-RW - cd re-writable ultra speed
    DVD+RW - RW dvd+r dl
    Lightscribe

    My System
    Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
    System Manufacturer Dell Computer Corporation
    System Model OptiPlex 170L
    System Type X86-based PC
    Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~2693 Mhz
    (computer - Intel, Celeron cpu2.70ghz, 2.69ghz, 2.00gb of ram)

Optical drive model and firmware revision:
    Computer Management > Removable Storage > Libraries > LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1H
    LLOA

    Device Manager
shows LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1H as the dvd/cd-rom drive.
    (Is this a DVD+RW drive?)

    Device Info...

It won't open stuff (data) I saved from last year on dvd on the same XP pc using Nero (stuff I really need!!) The hour-glass appears for ages - not responding - and I have to end task. My desktop icons disappear and am left with background image only for a few seconds til they come back. Often, everything hangs until cd tray is opened then all is well again.

I've been at this solid now for 6 days trying to seek an answer and I'm getting really fed up!
All I want is my drive back the way it was! (Sob!)

I have loads more to say on this but don't want to post a huge bunch of writing at once - that would put people off I think! Please feel free to ask me anything at all!

    Exasperated Carol

it is doing all this because it's finished.. buy a new one, they are very cheap.. and get rid of that horrid roxio crap at the same time as it conflicts with absolutely everything.

I dont mind the fact that I may have to buy a new one.
What bothers me is what if i do this and the problem still exists?
Maybe some conflict or setting or something?
That's why I want to really make sure.
    Thanks anyway
