Help! I am unable to get my disc tray to open so I can remove one dvd and play another dvd. It sounds like it wants to open, but it does not and I can't make it.

I have 2 LiteOn LVW-5005 DVD recorders (LiteOn makes the ilo04) and I had the drawer not opening problem ... it was the front cover of the DVD drive that was binding .. what I did was to pull the cover, remove the front of the recorder and carefully file the edges of the DVD drive cover ... works great now ...

Here's a link for an ilo forum you may find informative

    catfreak,

My Ilo DVDR04 dvd tray will not stay closed without tilting it at a 45 degree angle. I pulled the drive tray cover off and it closed with no problem. Do you think that my problem is actually with the cover? And do you think that I can solve the problem like you did by filing the drive tray cover?

It sounds like a different problem .. mine was an interference problem, the front cover (face plate) was binding ...

Does your tray open and close on it's own? Have you been closing the tray by pushing on it or have you been using the 'open/close' button?

I use the open close button. When I push the button to close, the tray closes for a few seconds and then ejects whether there's a DVD in the tray or not. But if I tilt the machine at a 45 degree angle it does not eject it back out. Or if I pull the tray cover off it loads the tray without ejecting the tray back out. I was thinking about leaving the cover off, but I am affraid that would allow more dust to accumulate inside the drive.

Do you know what may be causing this problem?

Sound like the tray might not be closing quite all the way ... When you take the cover off, the tray closes all the way and stays closed. Maybe if you pull the top cover off and adjust the DVD drive a little further forward the tray will close all the way and stay closed ...

Two screws hold a ground strap over the drive and two screws on either side ... loosen all six and slide the drive forward and re tighten the screws

Unfortunately it isn't the drive cover that is an issue for me. It is just that the disc drawer will not open at all. I can pull on the cover and it isn't sticking there, it just doesn't open. It makes the sound as if it is trying to open, but it doesn't. My daughter got Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a Christmas gift and that is the last movie we watched until she got another one for Easter and we were going to watch it. I have always had trouble with this dvd player/recorder and the disc drawer opening.

I think I tried that when I had the case opened. i was about to scrap the unit when it wouldn't stay closed. So I opened the case to see what was inside. And whalla I saw a IDE type DVD burner. I tried to take the drive out, but the tray cover did not allow me to remove the drive. So I removed the tray cover unplugged the IDE and power cord and removed the drive. With the drive removed and the tray cover removed I curiously plugged the IDE and power cords back up and the drive worked. So then I mounted the drive back in the unit without the cover, plugged the cords up and it worked. but when I put the tray cover back on it would not stay closed. With trial and error I figured out that it would stay closed with a 45 degree tilt.

I will try to move the drive forward.

    Thanks for your help.

I was given a LiteOn LVW-5005 recently by a friend ... I bought a LiteOn SOHW1693s drive, hooked it to my PC, downloaded the newest firmware and flashed the booktyping ute ... I put the drive into the LVW-5005 .. Had to modify it slightly (removing bottom, trimming here and there) ... the recorder works much better than either on of my drives ever did ... right now, I'm working with a pal of mine who's smarter that I am at editing hex strings .. we're going to make the darn thing burn DL discs ... you know, just for the challenge of it .. and besides, if it works it'll give me something to brag about

    barb53,

Is there a disc currently in your machine? Sometimes if a disc is placed in the loading tray wrong it can cause the tray to jam. If all else fails, it is possible to replace the DVD burner drive in the ILO DVDR04.

barb53 I believe that I addressed your problem in my first post ...
.. and from what I gather in the two other forums (specialising in LiteOn/ilo set top recorders) that I frequent, this is a relatively common problem and solution

good luck to all of you ... I'm outta here for the nite

Yes there is a disc in the tray and the disc will play without any problem. Only problem is it won't open now to remove that disc and put in another. When I first had this problem I called tech support and was told to hold in the stop button on the front of the machine and at the same time to hold in the open button on the remote and then the drawer would open. It did indeed open, but sometimes you would have to grab the drawer to keep it open as it would close almost immediately. This time that solution didn't work. The cover isn't hanging up as I can take a dull knife and pull on that part as I attempt to push buttons to open it and it still doesn't open. I know I can replace the drive, but they don't give them away for free and I sure don't have the money to replace it.

You can try pulling the drive and removing the cover and taking the disc out .. maybe the disc is hanging up in the drive somehow ... I understand that the disc plays fine but maybe it won't allow the drawer to open ... To access the disc the drive has to be removed to take the drive's cover off ... you can also clean the laser eye at the same time ... click on my user name and go to my blog for instructions to pull the drive ...

catfreak...it is still unclear to me how I remove the front of the dvd player/recorder to get to the drive in the first place. I can't figure out a way to remove it without breaking things and the drawer will not open even enough to remove the cover on it without breaking it off as well.

I'd pull the cover off of the recorder and carefully push the drawer open from inside the recorder
