    I have a LaCie d2 DVD+-RW External burner and use Nero 6.

I have had little success in burning data to DVD disc via its FireWire 400 interface. I have tried burning at different speeds, from 4x up to 16x.

I have however, managed to repeatedly burn dvd's via the USB 1.1 interface at an unreachable 16x. The problem being that it takes about 2 hours to burn a full DVD with USB 1.1.

I have been using Verbatim (MCC) media, which I believe to be of good quality.

I have seen a few different faults whilst burning via FireWire.
Sometimes Nero will report "invalid block address", and other times Nero will just stop burning at a varying point thru the process and just "hang".

I am considering upgrading to USB 2.0, but suspect that the problem lies with my choice of media, rather than my hardware.

    Any ideas ladies and gents??

Here's the Nero log from an ISO burned to a Verbatim (MCC) DVD-R at 4x, using FireWire 400 interface:

Please note that I had to disconnect the drive to abort the burn process after it ceased to burn at about 30% complete.

    thread teleported to relevant forum.

i've never used Firewire myself so any info i could offer on that would only be copy/pasted from somewhere. I've always resisted the temptation to buy pre-built external burners, i just use Belkin USB2.0 enclosures with standard dvd burners. But anyway, as you've found USB1.1 is pretty pointless for anything even remotely strenuous. 16x won't have been sustained over USB1.1, there's a registry tweak that forces Nero to display the actual burn speed during the burn instead of the misleading speed it normally gives..

i'll dig out the info re the registry link if i can find it...

edit- haven't found it yet but here's more similar info here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/440932/2666129

i'm looking for firmware info on your burner at the moment....

edit- see if this helps, i've found newer firmware 'LC03' here dated Sept. 6, 2006 - http://www.lacie.com/download/drivers/SH-W162LLC03.exe

"DVD drive firmware LC03 improves LightScribe printing quality and fixes minor bugs".

Keep a note of this link for checking for future updates - http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/index.htm

however from that webpage you have to select 'DVD' from the dropdown box entitled "Choose a product family"

I dont know if this will help. I dont know how long you have had your external dvd burner but if you were thinking about trying a new dvd burner try MADDOG. I bought this external dvd burner yesterday. It has both a firewire port and a usb 2.0 port also. I never tried the firewire before and it worked wonderful. It was fast! Usb 1.1 is nowhere near fast enough for buring information. The transfer rate is too slow. This external burner was on sale at CompUSA for $79.99. Just a suggestion!

only last week i plugged a cheapo USB2.0 PCI card into one of my olde worlde PC's as it's USB1.1 was unbearable for writing to a 1GB USB stick, now the transfer speed is amazing.

I'm hoping the firmware update in my previous reply helps the original poster's Firewire burns work correctly. If not this is why i don't like propietory external burners, i only use standard burners myself (obviously as long as the USB chipset in my USB2.0 enclosures works properly, which it does)

    Thanks creaky,

I already have the latest firmware (LC02), LC03 is for another model.

Still no solution. I am experimenting with other burners and other computers this evening.

I will try some other media brands tomorrow.

doh that was lucky, my eyesight!. you have very good media there, it could be that burner just doesn't like them. Again this is why i use standard burners internally to the PC or in an enclosure.. :)
