hi, last night while using my laptop, a red circle icon with a white cross (X) just appeared on the bottom right of my screen. a window then pops up around every 30 secs with the message

"Warning. Your system has been infected by spyware. Windows will now download the software you need for removal"

I have since ran AVG Antispyware & removed some stuff. The icon & window are now gone but i figure my system isn't clean since my wallpaper isn't showing.

    Here's the log

Download and install Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. That should get rid of a bunch of crap. Save the logs and post them here.

EDIT: You also have to run them.

Can anyone else assist me with this problem? I need to install a new program for my school project next week & i'm afraid my laptop will slow down even further. Thanks in advance =)

Quick shot in the dark. You got some 04's I would have to look each one up to know about them. I do not think they are a problem after closer looking. Lets try a Kaspersky on-line scan of your system. Wish we knew what spybot and AVG had found. I found ad-aware usually finds older stuff. You should just need to scan your system OS drive. Saves some time. What did you download / add / or change when this happened? Thats important to know. It could have been a drive by shooting but you look like you got good protection from that. I assume you keep those anti everything programs updated with the latest DAT files. Wallpaper sometimes vanishes depending on what the various programs fixed.

It's a school computer, has the looks of some Asian roots and has HP printer drivers.

One of the O4s changed after I fixed it. It was something like Run1OnceDay, and now it's something like Run2OnceDay, and I didn't catch that the first time around.

Sorry but i can't recall what Spybot & AVG found. I was surfing some sites for online manga when the icon popped out. And ya I bought my laptop from school, I'm in singapore so its from asia & the HP stuff are my printers. I did a scan with Kaspersky but it came up with nothing.

Here's my new log though I doubt there's any difference

Linn: No problem. That’s why we are here. At the moment nothing really pop's out at me but im still researching your log. What effects are you seeing now? What has changed? The antivirus university has a code of honor. "Never let them win...Never give up"
As I go through each line we will figure out if something else needs to be done. I don't want you to give up either! Im a little wounded right now so im a bit slower. Bk :)

You do have a process or two that does not need to run on startup. Those could be set to manual and will work when needed. Guess we are going to have to look at your start up processes and maybe you will have run the big daddy program of what it going on inside your computer. Ill wait for your response.

Kind of cool how you can pick up so much from a HJT log :)

Ok thanks alot =D And I do agree Hjt is cool. I can never figure out how you people can look through so much info & pick out the ones that causes problems. To me, its alien language. I salute u all ^^

Apart from the wallpaper problem, my laptop's speed been affected. It loads slower upon startup. Sometimes it kinda hangs when I open up new tabs while browsing the internet.

It isn't much of a problem now apart from those I listed. I find that Ad Ware & Spybot helped alot! It found alot more stuff that AVG couldn't find.

I encountered a similar type of spyware 1 year ago with this same laptop. It had the same icon thing going on. Both times, the cause seems to be that I opened up some website that I'm not suppose to. And I got duped both times to install some software which was not needed -_-

This time around, Symantec Antivirus issued me a warning of the threat & before I knew it, the icon appeared.

    Hi linn.

Lets see if we can get your Background working properly. I'd like you to run a tool for me please.

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Run the file, it will extract Smitfraudfix to its own folder and run.

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Yeah! Thank you very much KotaGuy =D

Can any1 advice me on what programs I should have in my laptop to prevent spyware like this from happening again?

I have AVG, Windows Defender, Symantec Antivirus & spyware blaster. My firewall is Windows Firewall.
After this incident, I also have Ad-aware & spybot.

I think I have too many & not all of them are really useful XP

What you have installed now is ok. One thing you must remember is that malware is changing daily. As such... there is no one solution that will forever prevent malware from sneaking into your system.

All you can do is be as diligent as possible with being careful about what you download and what sites you visit.

You mentioned you are using the Windows Firewall... so I assume you are not using Outpost anymore. If so you can fix this line with HijackThis:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OutpostFeedBack] C:\PROGRA~1\Agnitum\OUTPOS~1.0\feedback.exe /dump:eek:s_startup

You may want to consider using a Firewall that blocks both incoming and outgoing traffic. The Windows Firewall only blocks incoming.

ZoneAlarm and Comodo offer free versions of their Firewalls and both block incoming and outgoing traffic. They are a better solution than the Windows firewall.
