Uh-oh: House of Reps passes CISPA

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 26 Apr 2012 6:56 User comments (32)

Uh-oh: House of Reps passes CISPA In a scary development, the US House Of Representatives has passed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) by a margin of 248 to 168.
Despite the passing, the nightmare bill is still stalled in the Senate and President Obama has indicated he will veto the bill no matter what, regardless.

What is Cispa?

The new Act is intended to protect out Internet interests by updating the National Security Act of 1947 and follows the failed SOPA and PIPA acts, which were publicly flogged over how the invaded our privacy. Additionally, the Act is meant to protect companies from the likes of hackers in other nations like China and Iran, who routinely try to break into networks of American corporations.

CISPA would allow the government almost infinite power by telling private companies to hand over all personal data it has collected on you over to any government agency that ask, before it is handed off to the Department of Homeland Security. This data includes all emails, all social network posts, all blog comments and everything else you do online.

In the bill itself, it says the companies will not have to pass on the info unless there is a "cyber threat," which is defined as "efforts to degrade, disrupt, or destroy government or private systems and networks." That means, for example, that someone writing the term DDoS on a forum post, can technically be eligible to have all their personal data handed over to the government.

Despite large companies like Facebook, Google and Microsoft supporting the bill (see all 28 here) for its anti-hacking properties, the White House is on the side of the people, with President Obama stating: "Cybersecurity and privacy are not mutually exclusive. Moreover, information sharing, while an essential component of comprehensive legislation, is not alone enough to protect the Nation's core critical infrastructure from cyber threats. Accordingly, the Administration strongly opposes H.R. 3523, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, in its current form."

He's not on the side of the people. The administration backs a Senate bill sponsored by Sens. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, that gives Homeland Security the authority to establish security standards. Which would be a bigger charlie foxtrot than CISPA

I find this very scary. I think it is more of a fear of the unknown. Hackers are getting a smarter at a faster pace, than the security people to protect these firms. Now politics are getting involved and that is not a good sign. Soon, back to BBS.

STOP TRYING TO RULE THE INTERNET, AMERICAN POLITICS! t's getting too f***ed ud in here...

CISPA is an outrage, our privacy continues to be violated on a daily basis. If not stopped, what will remain private in our lives? ┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐#CISPA ┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐#SOPA ┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐#ACTA ┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐#C-11 ┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐#PIPA ┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐#TPP ┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐#HR1981 #StopCensorship

the sly Obama administration opposes CISPA because it thwarts their effort singularly control the entire country. It's tedious but, read the White House cyber-security proposal released around this time last year. Their proposal gives the dictator...whoops, sorry...President, the power to shut down; the government, the cell towers, the electrical grid, financial sector, transportation, everything.
And, "volunteer", and "privacy" are based upon the dictator's...sorry...determination of "compliance".

Looks like George Orwell's "1984" book may come to pass. Time to leave the country, but where to go?

1127.4.2012 09:59

Now here is an idea, and its just an idea.......but go after those people who are breaking the law in the ways of cyber terrorism. Those of us who just use the internet for the things it was built for shouldnt have to go through this crap, and it is crap at this point. I think that we need a change somewhere, and to try to get back to the olden days.

He has promised to veto stuff before, and he has not done it. When they did they military finance bill that suspended parts of the constitution and made animal sex legal for the enlisted, he said he would veto it...then he signed happily. Compared with that, this is nothing...so I'm sure his veto threat is no more valid than his many broken campaign promises.

And yet you forgot to mention that the Bush administration pushed through a little thing called the Patriot Act, already allowing the very thing you're quaking in your boots about.

The beautiful thing about it's verbiage is that it hides under the guise of Homeland Security where your definition may simply be vague hyperbole. That's why it failed.

A great idea as the old days weren't as bad as they seemed. But at least in the US our Quaker mentality & idiotic attitude of "we are better than 'them'" or "we should raise them up to 'our' standards" is so chocked full of horse shit that we've complicated things to a point that no one can live up to "the standard".

I would say that's why we have the 99%, but even the 1% is bullshitting themselves, because the money is blinding them. Even intelligent people realize you have to go back to a book once in a while. It's called reference material. You can't memorize it all.

I'm about ready for Soylent Green to become ready for sale. Priced right & stacked high for remarkable record setting sales.

Obama can plan to veto this bill all he wants, I fear that it will pass the Senate and will be signed into law once Romney is elected. I'm not slamming one candidate or another but on this particular issue....Romney would sign this into law.

The reason why the Obama administration opposes CISPA is because he and his administration are worried about votes in the up-coming election. But as soon as he is re-elected "if he is" he will pass this CISPA. This is the only reason obama is saying this. I will bet a lot that he will pass this into law as soon as he is re-elected. If obama vetos it before the next election in november then he's serious about his citizens concerns on this issue.

what happened to the good old USA where we had freedoms
=sigh= two political party's are destroying our freedoms one bit at a time... what our founding fathers said themselves.

"Any people that would give up liberty for a little temporary safety deserves neither liberty nor safety." Benjamin Franklin

"The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed and that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of press." Thomas Jefferson

ahhhh and here we are giving up freedoms for this so called safety! pshh good old America dies on bill at a time

I am not a Republican either, since all of them are the same Govt. manipulators.

The upper class, the Corporations and the Governments are terrified of the Revolutionary Information Flow on the internet......is the only truth I see :)))
They want to be on power forever and controlling the people (wage-slaves) with new laws.

The only solution is:
Either you Revolt or you spend the rest of your life waiting for a petty raises!

Technically, as far as I can remember, members of the House are elected by the people. Unlike the President, however, the members of Congress (House + Senate) can run again and again without limits.

Realistically, the corporations somewhat control Congress via lobbying.

Here is how the checks-and-balances is supposed to work:

What doesn't make sense to me is that the President nominates Judges but the Judges can declare a President's acts unlawful (although the House can remove Judges to balance it a bit).

The other thing is that the President can fill "empty" seats in the House with whoever they want. It almost makes the supposedly-balanced system a near-dictatorship (no matter who holds the Presidential Office).

Anyone that thinks the Repub, Dems or any other political entity will make things better for the people of this country, you are sorely mistaken. They only care for supporting corporate America and enriching their own lives at the expense of the middle class and poor. Get used to it, the people are like lemming's off a ship, and will do nothing to stop it.

I disagree that the current level of government corruption is either static or permanent, or as widespread as the media leads a gullible populace to believe. The worst in congress are the longest serving. While newer members are wide-eyed and hopeful. The 2010 elections ushered in about 50 Tea-party backed candidates and about half of those are still loyal to the smaller-government cause. The rest succumbed to the if-you-want-a-committee-assignment-son-you-gotta-play-ball multi-term thugs. We still have some outstanding representatives, and my view of government is a long one; it takes decades to weed out problems, and, sometimes, generations.
America is almost finished now. If our incumbent president is reelected, the socialist media will continue to cover for him as he welcomes Putin and the Muslim Brotherhood into power here.
But, American voters are - slowly - awakening.

Hope every idiot that has no concept of not putting stuff on a pc that has a link to the net or dealing with corporate America gets banged in the behind without any lube. The unibomber warned us all, its up to you all to protect yourselves and stop relying on the concept that the Internet is the free vast thing for you all to use. Last I looked, the govt's and corporations paid for the infrastructure so deal with it or find an alternative like making a secondary internet free from this one....ha there's a thought but I guess bitching is easier and just paying an ISP and logging on doesn't take initiative or brain power so keep on keeping on....

You absolutely missed the point.

Like LordRuss said (paraphrased), the patriot act was the beginning of the end of freedom in the United Snakes.

I suppose you think Mitt will cure all your ills?

I never vote along party lines. In the case of the 2012 presidential election I will vote for the lessor of the two evils.

Since the conservative Bible Fox News tries to make Ron Paul look crazier then a bat, I have no choice to vote for Obama.

The cost housing in my area has gone up 20% the past year. Trying to undo what the brain dead Bush administration did to our country, it's quite an achievement.

No. I know most of his faults and strengths; I know not to listen to the Socialist Mainstream Media, and instead gather my own information. The SMSM (including Fox for those who do not know that it's content is, in part, dictated by a Wahhabi) will say nothing positive about a Republican, and nothing negative about a Democrat. And so, since most people take their words as gospel, and investigate nothing, end up as brainwashed liberals. Liberalism is a disease and I learned long ago that facts are the wind to them so I don't quote any.
The following non-sequitur proves my point:

I disagree that choosing a Marxist over a capitalist is a solution. And, ABCNBCCBSCNN did far more damage than Fox to Paul - whom I wish had won the nomination. If nothing else, he will make a stellar Sec/Tres. Geithner is the worst in my lifetime.
