Hi i was trying to make a backup copy of my Star Wars II movie, you know got a new pc with a dvd writer so wanted to try it out.

I have been reading through this forum and found it very usefull, what i'm struggling a bit with is dvd shrink, i have managed i think is took of all the extras, but whren i go to burn the movie onto a dvd-r my sofware still tell me the file is to large.

What i want to know is am i using shrink correctly or am i missing something on how to exactly shrink a movie.

    Thanx in advance.

Try the guide from Scuba Pete at this site it has guides and burning basics.

Are you using re-author mode in Shrink? How big is the file after you run it through Shrink?

hi sorry for taking so long to get back, yes i tried using re-authoring on shrink, file size is 3.65gb movie lenth 2 hours 15 mins, but when i run it in my burning sofware it still says that file exceeds the disk, which is 4.7 gb, one more thing i also noticed that when i open the folder i created in re-authoring it came in four parts that are all .vob files, can you maybe explain how this happened.

    misters,
Did you set the burn size in Shrink to 4.3 gb. Go to Edit> Preferences>Target DVD size> below that is the blue box change it to custom and to the right of that type in 4300. Now the DVD burn will be limited to 4300 and will not burn to the outer rim.
When you re-author the movie you will get .ifo files ( information files) .bup ( backup files) and .vob files ( movie files). There is a limit on the size of a file in Windows so that is why you have 4 .vob files

Hi the burning software i'm using is called power2go which has been ok and manage to burn dvds and cds ok only dvd has to be put on two disk that is why i would like to learn how to use dvd shrink.

I also done a convertion of the movie using dvdx to dvd then ran it through dvd shrink with the open files folder the folder was called something like video_ts, that how i think i ended up with four .vob files, i can manage to burn 3 of the .vob files on one disc but when i try to add the fourth one thats when i get the message not enough disk space.

I hope this helps shine more light on what i'm doing.

    misters,
The Shrink guide is in arniebears answer. Did you set the size to 4300? What is the total size of all of the .vob files?

Use tab and instead of DVD-5, use custom and set MB at 4300, hit ok

Click on the Video_Ts folder and let Shrink analyze. If you follow arniebears picture and insert 4300 there then Shrink will compress the movie to 4300 or in you case 4000 ( give or take)as I did not add up the size.
