This is my second post with this issue. Emails to Nero tech support did not help. The PC crashes as soon as I start Vision 4. All other included programs run/work fine. I tried different versions. Nero logs do not show any useful info.

I included the crash dump analysis in case someone has some suggestions..
    Thanks for reading and help...

    lets try another alternative:

    what are your pc stats?
    what media do you use?
explain what you do while the process is running?
can you press crtl+alt+del and tell me how many processors are running?

I am not using any media. This is not a burning problem.

    PC Specs
    1. AMD Athlon 64 3400+(socket 754)
    2. 2GB Ram
    3. Lots and lots of HDD space (terrabytes)
    4. NVIDIA 6600GT with latest released drivers http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxpmce_81.98.html
    5. Onboard sound connect via optical S/PDIF to receiver.

    7. MCE 2005 + ALL patches+ Zonealarm Pro _ AVG Antivirus
    8. Thatertek 2.2 and Nvidia DVD decoder (bundled with TT)

All Nero program EXCEPT vision 4 work just fine. But as soon as I START nero vision 4, the PC crashes (BSOD). I do not get a chance to run anything on vision 4.

I analyzed the minidump produced by Windows with windbg and produced the results in the earlier post.

Hi, I have experienced this too, and I am very sure that SP2 in windows is the problem, I have used NeroVision 2 and 3 alot(!). And about 10 months I had SP2, but it restarted all the time just by it's own, now I have a good Windows version with SP2 installed. And when I start NeroVision it restarts (not all the time, but alot, like 3/4 times.) Can anyone check this out?

Smodak and I have been noting this crash/restart with NeroVision4 but in our last exchange I think we have identified our firewire (IEEE1394) card to be a possible conflict. Does your setup have such a card?

I second that. I think there are non-standard firewire capture devices that cause this problem with Nero Vision 4. When we start Vision 4, it starts enumerating the firewire cspture devices, finds a non-standard (unexpected for Nero) device and creates a conflict (page fault in non paged area - bad driver issues etc.) and the machine BSODs and restarts. In my case its a specific firewire device (my Motorola 6412 DVR Box connected via firewire). I can disable the motorola AVC and Tuner device in device manager and all is well. Only if I knew a way of instructing Nero Vision not to enumerate the device as a capture device, all would be well.

Well done, Smodak. Have you communicated this to the Nero tech? In my last message to Nero, I suggested that it may be the firewire. I never thought to mention my 6412. So, it looks like we have the same issue. If Mikedeguz has one of these STBs connected, then we are on the right track for sure.

    Thanks ububba,
Yes, I sent the information to nero tech and asked for a way to tell Vision not to enumerate the 6412 device until they fix it. But knowing nero tech, I am not holding my breath on it...

By the way, it may not be a nero problem but may be a buggy driver issue. Look at my post in avsforum
    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7294342&&#post7294342
and then look in the next page the replay from timecop
    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=403695&page=80&pp=30
but nero should definitely give us a way so that we can instruct vision to ignore 6412...

I think this Nero tech is super incompetent. After describing my problem in detail and sending them all kinds of log files they still do not seem to understand the problem. They totally ignored the firewire issue I mentioned. After clearly telling them that the PC crashes as soon as I start Nero Vision, they are still asking for screen shots of Nero vision...Man this is really frustrating!!!

thank you for your email and your interest in our software.

Please send us the files below to analyse this problem:

    1.) Nerovisionlog.txt

This log file is always saved without any user interaction.
Our software will save it to the directory of the program.
For instance, for Nero it will save it to
    - Windows 2000/XP:
    <Systemdrive>\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Ahead\NeroVision
    - Windows 95/98/ME
    <Systemdrive>\Windows\Application Data\Ahead\NeroVision directory by default.
Please copy this file IMMEDIATELY out of this folder when the error occurs.
Otherwise the log file will be overwritten again if you restart Nero Vision/ NeroVision Express.
Please attach the log file to your email and send it to us.
If you cannot find the log file in this folder please check this setting:
    In Windows Explorer select
    > Tools > Folder Options > View > Hidden Files and Folders > Show hidden
    > files and folders
Confirm this change with "apply" and "OK".

    2.) Infotool.txt

    Download infotool.zip from ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/infotool.zip
Extract the zipped files onto your hard disk using WinZip or WinRar.
    Start InfoTool.exe by double-clicking it.
Once the progress bar has moved completely to the right, the Infotool's interface will appear.
You can access the Nero Infotool save option by clicking the disk icon (on the top beside the white field in which you can select drives).
Use the 'Save' button (bottom left), save an ’infotool.txt‘ file so that we can locate the source of the error.
When saving, it is important that all the boxes are checked.
It is only in this way that we can obtain all the important information.

3.) Please provide your Nero serial number for verification.

Launch Nero StartSmart and open the Nero ProductCenter by clicking
on the "Nero" logo in the upper left corner.
Select the tab "serial numbers", here you can see your serial number.

    4.) step by step description

Does NeroVision Express recognize the camcorder/ the external device at all ?
Are all options for capturing available in Nero Vision/ NeroVision Express
or are some options greyed out ?
Do you get an error message ?
Please explain step by step how you proceed and enumerate each button you select in Nero Vision/ NeroVision Express:
(Photo und Video > Capture Video > capture video to hard drive > configure...)

5.) Screenshots which show the settings

Please send screen shots displaying your video and audio settings in the capturing window of Nero Vision/ NeroVision Express.
Press the CTRL key and Print Screen key (Prt Sc) on your keyboard. If you have a laptop this process may be slightly different. With a laptop you will need to hold down the function key (Fn) and the Print Screen (Prt Sc) key simultaneously.
You have actually created a snapshot of your current screen display. Windows will not give any options; the screen shot is currently saved in the Windows clipboard.
Now launch Microsoft Paint (Start>All Programs>Accessories (utilities) >Paint). In Paint click on Edit and select Paste, the screen shot will display in the Paint window.
Click on "Save as" , name the file and choose .JPEG as the format in the pull down menu. The picture will be automatically saved to the folder "My Pictures" located in "My Documents".

Should you have any other request, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

    Best regards

Hey, I had gotten NeroVision to work, but not for long, it seemed to work after I downloaded updates from Windows. But it only lasted for a couple of days. It may very well be drivers, but I don't have firewire on my computer, I have USB 2.0, but I have only gotten USB 1.1 when trying to connect my PSP to the PC. Don't know if it has something to do with the Mainboard or what the name is for it, the device I connect the USB with. I have Windows SP1 now, and it may be something else, but I just have this problem with SP2, never with SP1.

    Hi Smodak,

I too sent a message to the nero tech but I have not heard back. I specifically said we thought it was the Motorola 6412 that is not being recognized. I now think it is WinXP that does not recognize it as I get an "unknown device" under the device manager which it says is located on the "NEC OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller". While when my 6208 was connected, it had to use the panasonic driver but I don't think the 6412 uses it so I don't know what he is talking about. The capDVHS program recognizes the 6412 as such but it did not recognize the 6208 -- for which I had to use the panasonic driver. Do you have any other programs that correctly recognize your Motorola STB?

    smodak,

I was incorrect about WinXP not recognizing the 6412. It does so under "imaging device" -- both as tuner and panel device. So, I am not sure what the "unknown device" is but it has something to do with the 1394 and, given that only the 6412 is plugged into the 1394 card and given what you said some time ago, it coud be something confusing Nero's capture routine. I tried removing it but WinXP just recognizes it as a new piece of hardware the next time I reboot.

    ububba,
Try disabling (if it is ok with you and does not screw up something else) the two Motorola devices listed under imaging device. Then start Nero Vision 4. I am sure it will work.

I do not think it is the 'unknown device' that is causing problem. Because Nero would not even try to enumerate them.

The Motorols AVC devices declare them as capture devices. When Nero Vision loads, it tries to enumerate all capture devices in the system. When it tries to do that with the Motorola AVC device, it creates the conflict and the system reboots. Why? I do not know...

    smodak,

as you predicted, I disabled the tuner (left the panel enabled) and NeroVision4 worked and set about configuring the ATI tuner. As I told the tech, the problem for me is that it was to use the output of the Motorola tuner that I bought Nero -- so while I can get it to work this way, it will not do. Hopefully, someone at Nero will figure out how to solve the problem. Maybe someone there should write a driver for the 6412. One can always dream.

So, I got an e-mail back from Nero tech today. He tells me to find the log file and send it to him. Amazing: I have repeatedly told them that it will not save a log file when it crashes. It opens a log file but it is empty (yet has the date and time of the crash attempt). And I have repeatedly told them what the problem is: recognizing the Motorola 6412 STB. How can we get this across to them? Frustration is an understatement!
