Any help would be much appreciated.

It stopped working recently, and one of the members here advised me to update my firmware, Nero and to turn on the DMA.

I did all of that and it started working again, but I'm now getting more error messages.

    Here's the log:

Hi there @needs. Did you recently change the type of media you are using? Like lacquer finish or mirror? There are a few other posts throughout AD which describe the same thing. Some drives don't like mirror fronts and won't burn. Try a solid color front.

Nah, same good quality Verbatim I've always used.

Just an FYI: The shiny top/"lacquer" finishes are top quality media too (Verbatim or TY, of course).

Hi @Mr.Pink. I see many people seem to choose verbatims and the TY. What's the difference between media's? Besides of course book type? I've used any variety of on-the-cheap brands for about 4 years now and never had a problem with any of them. Are they made differently?

Seems to me your Nero may be damaged or corrupted. At any rate your SCSI error is this:
    INVALID COMMAND OPERATION CODE

I figure that out from the bit of code in the error:

    Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)
    Sense Code: 0x20
    Sense Qual: 0x00

Then I go to my chart which has all these listed.

    http://www.isobuster.com/isobuster/help/hs305.htm

Nero sends out commands (requests) to your DVD drive and if what Nero sends does not make sense to your drive then your drive(The SCSI device) tells Nero (or anyone else thats listening) that the command is invalid.
At this point Nero wants to know how much space is available in the drive's read buffer. That's what it's trying to ask. This error is simply your drive telling Nero "I can't understand you!

All the other errors that follow are the result of a sort of cascading effect, the first error causes another error and so on. Like a big car wreck. I tend to ignore subsequent error messages until the first one is corrected.

Nero gets screwed up on occasion, sometimes things get moved around or inadvertently deleted. The thing to do at this point is to remove and reinstall the program. But first you may want to try Nero's Registry Checker and Driver Cleaner tools.
    http://nero.com/nero6/enu/Clean_Tools.html
Sometimes simply getting the registry settings back in order will solve this type of error.
The driver cleaner will make a list of any conflicting drivers. If there are none you will not see anything happen when you click the tool's .exe to start it. Maybe just a quick flash.

If these don't help then remove and reinstall Nero, using the General Clean Tool. You may want to install Nero in your Program Files Directory as well. That's the normal spot.

It could also be a problem with your drive. You may want to test it with a different program, DVD Decrypter is good for that sort of thing.

    Let us know...
    Cheers,
    Frank

I tried the registry cleaner and driver cleaner tools but no luck.

I'll try reinstalling Nero using the general clean tool.

Hi @needs, I know you stated you use top quality discs, but even the best of manufacturers have shipped bad press's. Meaning, it's possible you may have received a bad batch of discs. Just out of curiosity have you tried picking up a single or maybe a five pack of another type of manufactured dvd-r. I had a similar problem. I tried another disc and everything worked fine. I did the same stuff you did. Cleaned the reg, updated the firm. re-installed nero, even went as far as going back to old 6.6. I tried everything and was sure it was the drive. Until somebody told me to just try another kind of disc. For sure that's what it wasy. Just a last ditch option. Hope everything works out for you.

Are you using Hacked firmware as Nec's site is showing firmware 1.A3 but you are using 10GE? Or is this burner an OEM?
    Recorder: <_NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A> Version: 10GE

This log has a Power Calibration error. That points to a drive problem.

This is where I got my firmware: http://tinyurl.com/kmk2k

I reinstalled Nero (got version 7 premium). I used it to make a data CD and it worked fine.

It's still not working with DVD Shrink (Nero) but I can use DVD Decryptor, I just select create ISO and burn with DVD Decryptor, works fine.

    @needs -

thread teleported to Nero forum :)

    - looks like you have a DELL OEM drive; just checked Dell's site, 10GE is dated 25/04/2003!!. As far as i'm aware, 10GE was the latest update for this burner...so it's way old now...

    - your blank discs aren't being recognised, due to the firmware being so old. this is similar to what you should see -
    - ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date.

Have done some searching on my old posts regarding old NEC burners such as yours...

(here's a link to one of them, at the very least it reminded me of a fun thread - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/197820)

    Anyway, the standard 1100A can manage the following = 4 DVD+R, 2.4 DVD+RW

From looking here - http://herrie.org/upgrdr.html the 1100A can be morphed into a 1300A, (ie via firmware update you can wring a little more life out of this burner, but not a great deal as 4x discs are becoming more scarce now) but it's a 50% success rate for either (i interpret the success rate to mean 50% success rate of burning to media at the newer speeds of the 1300A firmware, not 50% chance of the firmware upgrade itself working).

if you morph this old drive into a 1300A, you have access to the following new capabilities - 4.0x DVD-R & 2.0x DVD-RW

Basically firmware is what 'teaches' a drive about makes of media, burn speeds, how to interpret media etc etc, and your drive is just not recognising that media as the firmware is (probably current) however very old and the discs you're trying to use are newer than the burner is equipped to recognise/use.

    Also,
    - the ATAPI drivers aren't loaded correctly as they're not listed in this section, fix via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

Creaky is right @needs, as I had said, it's the media. I too was able to successfully burn cd's but not on that specific dvd media I was using.

I just tried using Nero to make a data DVD, using a good quality Verbatim, and yup it wouldn't recognise it, yet it worked fine with some crappy old 'Laser' brand discs. I use the cheap Laser discs for data; movies and games won't work on them.

It's weird how I can still use DVD Decryptor and Alcohol 120% to burn to the same Verbatim media though, and get perfect results.

I'll try morphing the drive into a 1300A and install my ATAPI driver correctly.

I appreciate all this guys, thanks heaps. I'll post the results when I get it done.

Edit: OK, how do I go about changing the drive to a 1300A? That page only listed possibilities, didn't have any guides/firmware downloads.

I also couldn't see on this page.......... http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm.........how to reinstall the ATAPI driver.

    needs,
The reason you can not write to Verbatim is because the burner does not recog that media as ther is no MID code written for it. You can get a burner for $40.00-50.00 US. The burner should be a d/l (-) and (+) burner. That burner you have is really old and NEC figures it would die so why write the code

Why does it burn to the same Verbatims when I use DVD Decryptor or Alcohol 120% though?

    needs ,
I take a guess at this since I am not the programmer at Nero. Evidentially Nero needs to code so the burner along w/ the program will operate properly. If It works w/ DVDDecrypter then use that to burn

So a pack of 100 Verbatims cost about as much as a new burner.
I mean, new burners are getting cheaper than the media we use. I spend more on media than I do anything else and yet I put in a new burner every three or four months. (Addicted to Pioneer burners)

It's something to consider. It would probably make all your problems go away.
