Used recode 2 for the first time and backed up Speed 1 & 2 and tho I thought the compression was to much, when I watched them they turned out perfect, the ENTIRE dvd. I don't know why I've seen so many threads in this forum knocking it. Guess you can't believe everything you read.... I'll give DVDLab a try, I've seen where it's free to try, where's the cheapest place to buy it?

i used decrypter and DVD Shrink and it produced a good quality movie, but when i tried using Nero and decrypter it let me put the first few chapters but the 4th chapter i got nerovision cannot convert these files
but was ok with chapter 5 on 6 i ran into a size problem. it seems a shame the freeware stuff no problema and a 50 quid program like Nero wont play ball

Hey giraff, you're screwing up the equation with decrypter and nero. Use shrink and nero or shrink and decrypter. Make sure you download your power pack nero updates (all 4) which you can access from the homepage. Also, make sure you register nero express, recode 2,which will shrink, and nerovision express to get their full capabilities (just hit the ? mark and enter your nero no. on all 3). You will then see the power of nero. I LOVE it. You can get anydvd to go with it and those are the only 2 things you'll need to do ALL your audio and video needs. Don't get me wrong shrink and decrypter are excellent programs also. Good luck....

I've been trying to back-up a few of my dvds and I can only play them on my PS2 my other home stand alone players won't play them after say chapter 5 or 6 of any given movie. I've used plus and minus dvds, i've been using the shrink/decrypter combo. I just don't know what to do. I'd like to watch my movies in other parts of the house than just where my ps2 is. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Tom, the ? mark is in the bottom left corner, NOT the one at the top. LEFT click on this and several options will come up. Nerovision help, enter new serial no., express on the web, tips, etc. Left click on serial no. and enter your Nero ultra 6 no. you got when you bought it. Done.

I've been using Decrypter/Shrink combo for awhile, and have not used Re-author -- until recently. The first 10 backups I made came out just fine, but the last 2 (used re-author) are unreadable on my standalone player. Back on page 7, Pete said that when re-authoring, you should drag ONLY the main movie over, but never explained why. I figured I should drag everything over except the trailers and extras. But this doesn't work. Does the chapter info get hosed when you drag more than just the main movie?

Now I read about Nero recode which appears to recreate the chapter info. I guess I don't understand why the chapter & main menu (to navigate) is missing when I thought I moved it all over. I don't want to buy Nero. I would like to keep the main menu & "skip to chapter" stuff there, just remove the trailers/outtakes. Again, everything is fine as long as I don't re-author.

gman, not sure what you're doing, but I add different stuff in re-author all the time with the main movie in shrink and have no problems. I use the preview slider and click the add button one at a time until I have what I want, then if it's too big I re-encode. If it fits I go and burn. The extra stuff just comes out as each one a chapter. So yes, you can add more than just the main movie, outtakes, deleted scenes, alternate endings, etc., whatever flips your lid....

Let's all go back to school and learn the use of ISO files. It's in the manual. Rip Decrypter; load with Daemon; edit with Shrink; auto burn with Nero. Or use the first 2 and run through Platinum RF(to edit and burn). InCD with Nero is a compatibility issue with 321 studios software, check out the 321 bulletin on compatibility issues with software. The bulletin solves a lot of problems.

Very good point. Maybe this is the problem. Enlighten me on ISO's. I rarely read about them in online guides. Either they forget about them or don't know why you need 'em. What manual are you referring to? 321 bulletin?

Now you got me worried.
I've just started backing DVDs.
My first attempts were with Shrink and Nero 6 and BulkPak - result - coasters.
I then used Shrink to create ISO files and double clicked on this file opened Easy CD Creator 6 and burnt the disk - result - O.K but some pixels.
I now use RiDisc / Ritek - result - good, no pixels.
But I have noticed that the file on my HD (NTFS)created by Shrink is about 4,751,700 Mb.
Why would Shrink make a file seemingly too big for a DVD?
Should I make the file smaller?
Should I change my method? am I asking for trouble? even though things look O.K.

DVD Shrink - rip & re-author/compress
ImgTool - create ISO file (still don't know what exactly it does)
DVD Decrypter - write (burn) ISO to disk

Perhaps I’m not understanding you - I don’t know why when you use DVD Decrypter in the “File” mode you shouldn’t have any problem working with it -
I recommend you use Nero Burning ROM (Classic). It should burn like a Banshee -

Use this guide -

HINT:
First, create a folder for your work on your desktop - load your IFO, BUP and VOB files there - make sure they are in a folder named VIDEO_TS written like that (all in Caps) - some programs like DVD Shrink will make the properly named folder for you, others you must make the folder yourself - Nero needs that folder with all it’s contents in order to work properly -

If you had used DVD Shrink to create a file on your HD you are truly in great shape. First - Do not use Nero Wizard -
Please follow EXACTLY -
When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the “New Compilation” window. Directly under the title “New Compilation” is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose “DVD”. Directly under that click on the “DVD Video Icon.” Then click “New” in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the “DVD Video” window. In the left screen, click “VIDEO_TS”. In the “File Browser” screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the VIDEO_TS folder, the one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the “Shift” key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left and release the mouse button.
Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click “OK” and now, clear the room, stand up tall and shout out, “Burn Baby, BURN” ! One more time, let me hear you say it, “Who’s your Daddy Now ???”

If so, you should seriously consider converting to a NTFS file system - Read up on it, especially the comparison chart at the bottom of the page -

Nothing wrong with that formula “Big Guy”. If you are going to use something running in the background, why not use DVD43, it’s free and does the same job (though not quite as well) as AnyDVD -(I have both -) -

Some standalone players won’t read “el Cheapo” media - Original DVD’s are pressed, your backups are burned, read up on the proper media you should use and your problems should end - the info is in this thread, I know because I put tit there (Heh, heh)

When you want just the movie move just the movie over. Whenever you re-Author with DVD Shrink you will lose your menus. If you wish to maintain your menus, Nero’s recode2 is great. You can keep your original menu functions and move what ever you wish.

If you don’t wish to purchase Nero for $49.95, you could purchase something like DVDLab OR TMPGEnc DVD Author and make some really great custom menus to take the place of the ones you lost using DVD Shrink. Of course when the DVD backup bug bites you - like us, you could buy them all - (LOL)

Hey brobear, How’re ya doin” ?

Why rip with DVD Decrypter ? Too many issues there when DVD Shrink does an excellent job of ripping itself - Let’s compare the differences between DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, shall we ?

There is a big difference between the way different programs do their job.

Think of DVD Decrypter as a Circus Strongman with a sledgehammer who stands in the middle of the room smashing the encryption and miscellaneous DVD IFO files flatter than a pancake with no rhyme or reason except that everything must be flat.

DVD Shrink is more like a craftsman, picking apart the encryption and laying everything out so that later it can be reassembled in its proper order.

When do the differences show up ? They show up with some DVD’s like Disney’s where the IFO files have to direct the player in and out through the twists and turns of the many VOB files that we all have seen and wonder why that 5.9GB DVD when taken apart in DVD Shrink re-Author or recode2 turns into a 9.2GB of files. It shows up in every DVD filmed in a dual angled mode where again, the IFO files are needed to guide the player from beginning to twisted end of the movie. Smashing with DVD Decrypter all the time can be self-injurious. By that I mean we may well be left without a guide to take us through the twists and turns of the DVD to find our way from beginning to the end of our favorite movie. Using DVD Decrypter on these DVD’s results in sections left out of the film or a part coming before it should. One example given me was one section of the film was played in French with no way to turn it ‘round until the next “angle” of the movie came around (Bugger, that).

And THAT Boys and Girls is why we use DVD Shrink all the time and only resort to DVD Decrypter when we come up against a “Tough Nut” that needs “a-bit-“O”-Smashing” because the “Craftsman” got stuck on a particular tough knot that requires that rare “Smashing” approach.

I already read your directions on page 1, but I only have a single DVD drive. I have to resort to rip to HD before I can burn to a blank disk.

BTW, are the coasters I made repairable at all? They seem to have all the files on them. Oh, never mind, video disks are probably not capable of being added to like multisession CDs. ??

gman76, follow the steps. Most likely Shrink will do it thing until time to burn, and should prompt you to insert a blank disc to burn.

If you used +R or -R media they are "Coasters", they're good for that and nothing else - If you used an RW disc they can be re-written. RW media will play in your PC but most standalone players won't play them, that's why we use them for practice - when we get our burning technique down pat we use the single write media -

It’s not that you had to “Resort” to ripping to your HD - No matter what, you have to put everything on your HD before you can burn it to your HD.

Think of it like you’re making a Peanut butter and Jelly sandwich. Everything you need is in one place, the cupboard. All your DVD files are in one place, the original DVD.

You need a place to put all your ingredients, the Bread, Peanut butter and the Jelly - so that you can assemble them into a sandwich, you use the kitchen table. You need a place to put all the IFO, BUP and VOB files you are taking from the original DVD, you need to assemble them into a VIDEO_TS folder OR you need to put them all together into an ISO image, you need a place to work, you need the HD.

You assemble your sandwich putting your Peanut butter and your Jelly into two pieces of bread. When you are finished you can do one of two things. First, you can leave all the “Fixens” on then table to make another sandwich sometime later OR, you can put it all away and have your table clear again. In DVD backup, we needed the HD to lay out all the IFO, BUP and VOB files and then to assemble them into a folder called your VIDEO_TS folder OR to put them all together onto an ISO image. When you are finished you can do one of two things. First, we could leave them on the HD to make another backup DVD later OR we can have them in a temp folder to be deleted and have our HD space clear again.

As for your single drive, put your original in there to start. When DVD Shrink is finished and has told DVD Decrypter to burn, you’ll see a message to put a new disc in the tray.

Also to address your PC, you can pickup a really cheap DVD-ROM drive to put in your PC or to hook up through your USB connection. Having a DVD-ROM is easier for your PC to read the disc and it is much easier on your DVD burner. The constant stopping and starting of your burner required to read a disc could cause overheating and premature wearing out of your DVD R/W drive. Sooo, use a DVD-ROM for reading and your DVD-RW for cooking. You might even check ebay. Most people are almost giving them away.

Me thinks you don’t have coasters after all. Try playing them in a standalone player. Sometimes you might have to re-boot your PC in order to get it to play on it. I just finished backing up a 6-disc set of Captain Marvel (SHAZAM). Disc # 3 wouldn’t play at all on my PC but it played great on my standalone DVD player. Go Figure ? Try yours on a standalone to see what’s what.

Thanks for the help. This worked and I now got rid of he trial window for Nero Express Video 2.

I did not know that you had to go to this program seperately to enter the key code.
I thought when you did it in Nero burning it would take care of the other program also. But guess since I downloaded the Package 1 and Package 2 seperately you have to go to each seperate one and enter the key.

Concerning copy protection removal.

I downloaded the trail vs. of ANY DVD. It works fine and removes the protection on the DVD and or CD if it has one when you insert it in the drive.
This way you can only use DVD Shrink and you have double protectdion on protection removal in case Shrink encounters one that it can't remove.

The key is 39.00 which is good for lifetime of updates.

I am sure at this point I will be ordering the key.

I made one backup useing ANY DVD and Nero recode 2 and I think I like it better than Shrink. Looks like the same person wrote both as it is very very simular to Shrink.

I will be asking for advise and help as I get on into useing recode 2 from all of you, so thanks in advance.

Welcome! I would like to say that I have used Scuba Petes Guide, I shrink, then use decrypter to burn..I have a single dvd external burner(lite-on)I have had 2 coasters (one which was my own fault)I have had 25 successful burns..the only problem I found with a single dvd drive, is if I have shrink set up to automatically open decrypter,it would lose contact with the burner when I inserted a blank dvd then I would have to keep hitting retry..I have disabled the open dycrypter automatically, I insert a blank, "then" I open dycrypter and I havent had the problem since..

Just my curiosity, - Why AnyDVD for $39.00 dollars (currency of The United States of America) as opposed to DVD43 for FREE ??
