I asked in a previous thread about an error I received when I try to play a DVD.

It reads: "DVD Copy Protection Initialization Failed"

The thread has not received any answer, and I wonder if this is a unique problem, although I doubt it.

My system is a PIII-1GHz with 512 of RAM and lots of HD space; PC-DVD 12X, on WIN ME, ATI Radeon VE Graphics card; and WinTV tuner card.

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

    Thanks in advance...

Umh.. What do you mean? You put a DVD into DVD-ROM drive, launch WinDVD and press Play and you get the error, or...?

That is exactly what happens. I put the DVD in the DVD-ROM player (PC-DVD from Creative Labs) and I get the error. It happens with all the DVD's, so it is not a problem unique to that particular title.

This seems to -- according to the newsgroups -- be a problem with ATI's TV-out drivers. The ATI drivers don't allow pushing out Macrovision encrypted video, which your DVD obviously is (as 99% of movies are). Try to disable the TV-out feature on your card's drivers and see if that helps.

To specify further -- the problem seems to be actually with the fact that you have ATI's own DVD player software installed and setup so that it opens up by default. Remove/uninstall that and see if it helps and use real DVD player tools in the future (read: WinDVD or PowerDVD).

Well, it seems it was the ATI software, because when I upgraded, the problem disappeared.

Thanks for the help. Life should be so simple. :)
