I don't know about the rest of you, but I am seeing plenty of the "free iPod" scam postings.

Whenever I see them, I send an Offensive Post report and reply to the thread to that effect.

Invariably Nephilim, Vurbal et al follow it up reasonably quickly and the ar*ehole is history.

Anyone have any ideas how these kind of posts can be caught/intercepted automatically, passed to a Mod/Admin for vetting BEFORE it hits the forum?

    I have a suggestion:
    Naive Bayesian filtering of posts.
See here for a relatively simple mathematical explanation:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naive_Bayesian_classification

See here for a couple of articles that may be of relevance:
    A Plan For Spam:
    http://www.paulgraham.com/spam.html

    Better Bayesian Filtering:
    http://www.paulgraham.com/better.html

Here is an Open Source application (email filtering):
    http://spamassassin.apache.org/

That application is very highly thought of, it seems to have better that 99.5% accuracy in classification after an initial training run with a decently sized corpus of correctly classified messages.

That principle could be applied to posts...

    The scripting/regex functions are Perl.
The rule structures are regex in text files.

So, what do you lot think?
    Possible?
    Workable?

An alien death ray that shoots from their monitor would make me happy.

drchips: Thanks for the link and the suggestion. I'll add it to my way-too-long to-do list to look into this and see whether I could implement it to the forum software itself. My plan is still to develop the forum software "when I have too much time in my hands" (read: not likely to happen very soon..) as a stand-alone product and release it under some form of open source license or something.

But the sad fact is, in terms of development, that I spend nowadays 12hrs a day at "real life job" and have about 150 major to-do items related to the aD and its sidekicks (and most of them are type "recreate site X from scratch, implementing NNN features to it"..), so any not-that-urgent tasks will have to wait until the higher priority issues are dealt with.

Then again, as our forum software is unique -- nobody else uses it -- there are no spambots that know how to post here and also, the number of spams/scams is appx. 0.5 - 1.0 percent of the total number of posts, so the problem isn't luckily very widespread, even though annoying.

Understood, and I can see the point re: percentage of posts.

As that percentage grows, so will the benefit/cost ratio change in favour of an automated solution (partial or otherwise).

If the software route is on the to-look-at-list, can I ask how you are progressing on the development of the Alien Death Ray([bold]tm[/bold]) as that would be a very nice addition ;)

    Have Fun...

Is the I-pod deal a scam or do you just not like referal marketing?

It is just a scam. Many people who i have heard from and have done it say they never recieved a thing.

It is just a money making scheme for people who are stupid enough to do it.

If you want to advertise then here's the link:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/general/adprices.cfm

Otherwise take it somewhere else. Our forums are not for advertising or marketing.

    I don't care.

If you're little lottery thing is so great and profitable then you should have no problem buying some ad space here at AD.

You need to remove the link out of your sig as well. If I see it again you're gone.

I'm going to spend my time at a board that is more friendly. And I'll be purching my adspace where I'm welcome. You should not have this forum in search engine under "2. Make money
    Make money
    forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/71703 September 8, 2004 - 37 KB "

You complain about spam and people with money making opportunities yet your in the search engine for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You the real spamer putting it in the search engine that way. Or did someone pull a fast one on you?

How about Jesus saves--I polute and ocassionally recycle for my sig?

If your forum here was not in the search engine inapropratly I would have never found it.

Testing new sig per your request.

I like music so I may want to return here for the MP3.

I'm not a spamer. I take great care to not spam as I find it annoying myself.

Still I do think a link should be permitted in a sig however I'll honor your request.
