No 5.1 when playing a Xvid+AC3

I have ripped and encoded a dvd with Xvid following the AC3 guide on afterdawn. I also have the AC3 track from the dvd aswell...and combined the two (used acouple of diff programs VirtualDubMod, Virtualdubmpg2, Nandub etc)

However I can't seem to get it to play back in true 5.1 sound..ie with the centre speaker. If I play the AC3 file on its on it comes out fine with the centre speaker playing the main dialogue but as soon as I combine it with the avi then it just goes back to normal surround sound ie 4 speakers plus sub but no centre speaker. Any ideas? Not sure if its an issue with the way I mux the avi and AC3 or a playback issue..however I can play back AC3 files on their own with no probs.
