do you guys help out with any kind of cdrom?
    or just burners/dvd/et al..

    heres my question..
I have a celeron 366, 40g hard drive, sound blaster audigy pci, 288mb ram. (i dont know if its sdram, or edo, or what kind of ram.. this is just the number the bios reads when booting)..

I had millenium on it.. wanted to get some networking done easier, and I knew the Home Networking/Internet Connection Wizard in XP was pretty good..

So I upgraded to XP, and the cd rom dvd drive (a 16x dvd-rom) during the xp install stopped every 20 seconds and said the cd needed to be cleaned or no cd found.. finally got the OS installed, and i screwed up the dual boot somehow, and lost the millenim directory..
SO.. i was stuck on XP... (didnt know it was a 366 till this point, when i discovered the os running really slow when finally booting.. checked the os. and viola.. slow processor..

but the cd rom problems kept happening..
every disc i put in would make the drive whirr (spin) like it was about to take off.. and discs wouldn't read, or would crash explorer, or my computer..

i took out that drive, and put in a sony 24x burner i was using on my other win 2000 machine (which worked with NO problems...)
and the same kinds of things happened...
AND when trying to burn using either Nero 5.5.9.1.7.. (whatever the latest is on the website).... it would lock up anywhere between 3 and 10%.. and the time count would continue... for over an hour sometimes..till i rebooted.. cnt alt delete didnt even help..

when i used windows xp's internal burning software... it would error out, or lockup...

what can i do? i can't format because I need to back up things.. i HAVE to back up things... and neither my networking nor my burner is working properly...

    HELLLP.....

yes, i think it did that automatically before the setup was even done...

i dont know what the brand name of the dvd rom was before upgrading though..
but i do know my sony burner..
are there better drivers for the sony burner than what comes with XP? (original release.. not sp1)..

drivers on which site? sony? ms? or the dvd rom?

why would any cdrom i put in be giving me the same problems? whats the common denominator? XP i think..

i know the sony burner works on my other system.

so, im thinking its a bios thing, or an xp thing between the ide port and the os../or os & bios.. or the cable..
    most likely though.. the os.

and im sure im not the only one this has/is happening to....

    ... frustrated ...

sorry m8 - I shuld have read your details properly.

    I meant the MS site.

saying this (probably wrong here) is a celeron 366 enough?

probably not with XP.. would that take away from the CDROM working properly?
