Just thought I'd add my 2 cents on what I did to run a backup of SSBB.
This is what I have/use:
"1st generation"
Wii US/NTSC
WiiKey
Sony DVD recorder
Taiyo Yuden 8x -R
Verbatim +R DL
ImgBurn (2.4.1)
FriiDump (v .3 and .4)
What I did to create a backup
1) using Friidump .3, initiated a backup
ISO of SSBB, which bomed after it ripped 1/2. Process took 3.5 hours
2) using Friidump .4 (supports DL), and RESUMED rip using same command [friidump -d d: -a]. Process took about 3.5 hrs (so total is 7 hours - luckily, I was able to resume the .3 rip!)
3) Burned
ISO on Verbatim +R DL (no
layer break)
What I did to upgrade WiiKey
1) From 1st page of this thread, downloaded and burned Wiikey 1.9S padded US version on
TY -R (also got padded versions of Wiikey 1.4 config and 1.9b for recovery, but didn't use either of them)
2) Inserted 1.9s into
Wii and turned it on
3) Initiated process (test and upgrade) Upon completion of test, 1.9 showed me a "test successful and instructed me to press the "reset" button, which I did.
4) Initiated upgrade process. Upon completion of upgrade, 1.9s showed me a "upgrade successful and instructed me to press the "reset" button which I did.
What I did to upgrade the Wii (AFTER Wiikey upgraded to 1.9s)
1) Tested older backup games - worked fine
2) Inserted original SSBB (prior to WiiKey upgrade, SSBB original was not recognized) and allowed it to upgrade the Wii
firmware (which put it at 3.1US)
3) Tested older backup games (again) - worked fine
The backup (after Wiikey upgrade to 1.9s AND Wii upgrade to 3.1U)
1) Inserted backup of SSBB (no layer break)
2) It ran fine (so far)
3) Asked to create a save game file - which I did NOT
4) continued to run until the screen where it scanned past a row of characters, then "bombed" with a message "Can't read disk, read your manual"
5) pressed eject, removed disk, and put it aside
6) Burned SSBB ISO again but this time using layer break at 2084960.
7) Tested SSBR (layer break) and it ran fine (so far)
8) Asked to create a save game file - which I DID this time
9) Continued to run until I got to the same place where it bombed previously and got the same bombed message
10) Pressed eject, pushed it back in, clicked various Wii remote buttons and then .... the game continued and I was able to get to the next screen to select type of game, BUT I had to use the keypad to move around (no "floating finger pointer")
11) After this, subsequent testing worked fine. Never saw the "can't read disk" message and the floating finger pointer came back
12) Went back and tested SSBR (non-layer break) and now that one is also working fine, no problems.
Perhaps the "save game file" helped or I just needed to continue to click on the wii remote buttons or I needed to eject and reinsert the backup or some combination of the 3 in order to get it to work. But the bottom line is my backup SSBB (both layer break and no layer break versionS) work.
Thanks to all on this thread who shared their problems and solutions.
Hope this helps someone out there.
