i dunno but i wana know too. i think you need a mod chip in your xbox too. x box cd's are invriped so that only the x box can read them. u probably need some software to allow your to read past the encription. :S

    hehe.. i know how..
you'll need a mod chip (prefereably a matrix mod chip), evox D6 ejectfix bios for the mod chip, evolution x dashboard and a network card...
see my guides i posted for it..

dvd burner is ideal, i have one so i dont' know or haven't tried to backup games to a cd-r. probably going to be quite a bit or work, and you need to find the right kind of cd-r media, xbox is picky on reading cd-r's.. cd-rws, dvd-r/-rw and dvd+r/+rw it isn't as picky with but cd-rs it is.. weird..
if i get some time this month, i check out the process of doing games to cd-r (i've gotten a few requests on a guide on how to do it, so if people would think it was useful, i'll consider it as my next project)

i think someone forgot to mention that the x-box does not read dvd+r or dvd+rw disks. so in theary you would be wasting your time. oh and it will not read cdr but will read cd/rw
if anyone tells you diffrent matey. like it will read dvd+r disks they are either attention seekers or full of ***p

    what??

    AIDEN: you have been misinformed.

I have an XBOX mod and it reads all of my XBOX games i have ripped onto DVD+R and DVD+RW.

My xbox is the older version 1.0 too.

AIDEN, why are you misinforming people????

-NOT TRUE! do you know how to even rip a game?
understand the file system that xbox's use?
DVD+R won't work if you dont' have a mod chip, a mod chip is required to play any "official" "backup" game.

here's what i use and they have worked:
    -Memorex 4.7 GB DVD+R and DVD+RW discs
-Verbatim 4.7 GB DVD+R discs (high quality generic, the ones on ebay)
    -HP 4.7 GB DVD+R and DVD+RW discs

do i know how to rip a game ??? lol
you connect the network cable in the back of x-box load the dashboard up etc,etc the i use flashftp
now i guarantee you that in my machine it will not read a dvd+ disk and i have version 1 with the enigmah chip installed
i use the philips dvdrw228 drive and have tryed
    philips disks
    tdk
    datawrite
none will load up when i asked at the fair they told me the x-box wont read dvd+r disks, rougthly 15 people that are chipping the damn things on a weekly basis told me this. they all cant be wrong. how ever if you were to proove me wrong then i will say sorry to all the good people that read on this forum. the only thing i can think of is that you have a diffrent drive in your x-box than i have in mine. but like i say i may be wrong

re: AIDEN; sorry about jumping the gun there..
thought you might be someone trying to undermine the DVD+R/+RW format... again, my bad..

hmm.. perhaps its the burners too..
i have an HP200DVDi COMBO DVD+R/+RW and CD-R/-RW drive.. and i have a matrix mod chip in my xbox with the evox D6 EjectFix bios and have gotten all of my xbox backups to work, including the ones that i made my own menus for and put multiple games on (i love my jedi knights and splinter cell dvd!!)

    again, sorry about that..

no probs seamonkey, i will keep trying with the dvd+
to be honest i use the dvd- drive more, mainly due to the price of the media and the compatability issue, not slagging the + media off or anything. im happy with both writers

    peace matey

Does anyone knw where i can get decent technical information on the XBOX, and it's protection schemes. I would like to try and make my own modchip. Also if anyone feels they could help please contact me. i have experince in programming, and programming pic chips. but absolutley no electronics experince, so someone with electronics or pic chip experince would be a great help

thanks in advance for any info.

    wassup Phreak

    here are a few links:

    -basic hardware tech specs
    http://www.pcvsconsole.com/features/consoles/xbox.php

-whitepaper on protection scheme flaws (this is the payload of what your looking for, i think)!!!
    http://web.mit.edu/bunnie/www/proj/anatak/AIM-2002-008.pdf

i want to know if there is a way to edit an evox d6 bios file to allow for a IGR-like feature except it would be to power off/on the xbox itself? Or perhaps a way to get the dvd dongle remote to turn it off/on..

    peace

Thanks for the info, ahh if only i had a the cash to buy a logic probe.

U can probably accomplish what your on about. You should check out the OpenXDK on sourcefogre, as for powering the xbox down, i should imagine u'll have to do some poking around, no doubt theres an interrupt or something to do it. As for working with the remote, i belive it is connected to the XBOX's USB system (all perephrials are), as for as i knw, there is no code in the OpenXDK for this but u could try looking at the soucre for the XBOX linux project, or the media player they are working on.

    good luck!

so seamonkey it sounds if we have a comparable set-up, your xbox is able to read the dvd+r(rw) stuff right? I just got a new xbox, I am wondering if they took that fuctionality out of the newer versions or maybe if they have added it. I have not as of yet checked your guide (Im at work). I am interested in getting the matrix chip, do you have links to the bios image out, and maybe a good details guide on how to flash the chip? These are the things that I am looking for. Also are you able to play the "backed up" version and the orginal simultaneously on live or system link? Help

System link should work fine. It's still the same game, no code has changed, the only thing the chip changes is the boot sequence, nothing else should be effected. Except if u install a new dasboard, then live may be affected, depends if the dasboard supports live.

    hope this helps

Are XBOX games DVD-5 format or DVD-9. (Aka single or dual layer DVD's.)

If games are dual layer how can they be copied?

Most will fit on a 4.7 Gb disk....only a few are bigger than that.

to make the others fit, you have to get rid of some of the videos.but they have to be replaced with smaller ones.

AIDEN and seamonkey, here is something you will find useful...or so I hope...

Some DVD Burners set their "burn bit" to DVD-ROM and that's fine. DVD-ROM is expected by all stand alone players and gameboxes. HP burners are set to it by default but not Philips's (I use DVDRW228). Use this little utility (link below) to change that and enjoy your backup copies..:)))

I have fairly good knowledge on DVD systems and duplication etc. Unfortunately know nothing about xbox or playstation2 game "back ups". Can anyone of you fine gentlemen help me out please.
There is a lot of publications (contradicting statements) on this subject and I have hard time making something out of it. Please help or point me to the right spot, much appreciated...
