If using laptop external Hardrive to capture dv via firewire, does the capture program need to reside on the external drive for maximum performance?

Install the capture program on your normal system/programs drive, and keep the external drive just for storage. The storage drive will most likely fill up fast, and when drives get near their full capacity, there's usually a decrease in performance. So its best to keep programs and video storage separate.
