    Hi I have a Philips DVD +RW DVD8601 drive in my computer and I have tried to burn a DVD but with no success. I inserted a blank DVD-R into my the drive but it wouldnt read it, am I right in thinking that it will only burn to DVD + RWs?

    This may be a compatibility problem with the media your putting in your writer.I would recomend you check out Philips web site and you should find they will rate different types of media for your drive.
