Hi. I'm a newbie to this site and computers so please bear with me. I have an LG dvdrom & an NEC dvdrw, when a disc is put into either one and starts to "load" my system completely freezes. Completely! Only a reboot unfreezes it and 90% of the time it will freeze up again after it detects the disc. I have a ASUS P4P800S motherboard, P4 3GHZ, 1 gig of ram. System is clean, no viruses, Slave & master are correct, Device Manager is ok, URL's are different, no conflict. Major Headache when trying to burn cd's or install new programs with drivers. Any and all help is greatly apprieciated.

PS please explain step by step--I'm a newbie.

switch drives around so that dvdrom is slave & writer is master. cable select needs a certain 80 wire cable so leave it alone. enable dma on rom drives in device manager/cdroms/properties. might have to restart windows after that

ddp - after a lengthy ordeal I believe the dma was enabled. I don't have a settings tab. Problem still exists. Anything else I can try. I'm lost on this problem, but desperately seeking help, it's driving me nuts.

physically disconnect 1 rom drive at a time to see if problem stays or goes away
