There are methods to booting a backup BUT it is far worse than just putting a modchip in. The process to boot without a modchip is horrible you have to leave the PS2 in pieces and use a plstic knife or similar to pop of the spindle at a certain time while the disc is spinning down etc, etc, etc,. IMHO it's not worth it. There is some new developements where you use a boot disc and install a NEW top half for your PS2, but this still voids your warrant and you still have to do a disc swap etc. Try here to check it out www.ps2cover.com . I would suggest getting a profesional to instal a quality chip like messiah, magic, judas etc. Dexter

Just buy a good Modchip that will boot CD and DVD copies.
I also heard of the Knife methode but it's not easy and mayby it's ruining your PS2.

One thing to watch out for if you're booting without a modchip, for your ps1 games you need a gameshark1 or action replay 1. The ps2 version will only work once in a blue moon for ps1 games!

As for the knife method, it wont leave bits of your ps2 everywhere.

When you get to the point where your gameshark/actionreplay allows you to boot a game DO NOT OPEN THE DRIVE AND DO...

Knife Method

Step 1: If possible get a small flash light. Shine a light underneath where the disk tray is. With the PS2 in the horizontal position, about a third from right, you will see a white pin.

Step 2: Using a plastic knife slide the pin to the far right. The tray will pop out.

Step 3: Now, put the backup that you wish to play into the disc drive. Push the tray firmly back in and using the knife, make sure the white pin has moved as far left as it can go.

Now all that’s left to do is… Press ‘X’
The game should boot. Enjoy.

Taken from Ps2 Booting For Dummies!

the only thing you need to do is remove the front of the tray carefully and its easy to get back on!

You should be able to by using a gameshark 2/action replay 2. But I never tried so, don't take my word for it!
