I've been dealing with this prob for quite a while. All my avis (xvid or divx) are just too dark. Tried diffrent players, different codecs, but nothing seems to really help. Increasing brightness simply washes out the detail. Any suggestion?
Yes I know what you mean. I attempt to adjust for this when I make a backup. Correcting it during playback doesn't quite satisfy, as you have observed. When making a backup with GordianKnot, the adjustment can be made at the beginning of the process when DGIndex is opened: select Video > Luminance Filter and then increase Gamma to +10. A tiny brightening can immediately be perceived even in the deepness of a pure black frame (a pluge test would display two levels of black now, quite properly, instead of one). But watching 'other peoples' backups - not much you can do... L8R
for playback, you could try leveling it with ffdshow, or Ylevels avisynth script by didee. for preprocessing Ylevels is the one to use
