if you want to use matroska container, its best to use mkvtoolnix http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=0b8ff7b9aa5d0ecc3bfb0dba46e1e420&threadid=90628 if you want to extract the streams use mkvextract. and here is the gui http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73819 there's no reason to change a nice mkv to avi. only convert when you have to, converting to DVD, for standalone player, etc. for archiving its better off with mkv, there's reason why the container was use, aside for it being cooler.

Is vdub that good.I was attemping to use one of the riverpast applications but it would only convert the first 2 files and the other 10 it refused to and kept shutting down.The actual files where the animated guyver series .225MEG EACH and riverpast convertered them to 1.5 gig.Sound was fine but there was some uneven pixalation.
really ? vdub crashes on you ? the only problem i got is missing dlls, but that was missing from windows, could be i scratched my cd...? but got it replaced afterwards. as for riverpast connversion. did your guyver converted to 1.5GB each or all of them ? and did you convert them as in reencode ? if its for dvd format, mpeg2, thats fine. if its just to get it into avi, that means you've reencoded the video, and propably audio unnecessarily. basically ogm is a container to hold the video+audio+subtitle stream. the video is still in mpeg4, those of xvid/divx etc. so you demux it, make an exact copy of those streams. this will take a few seconds depending on the length of the video. ususally you can expect 2000+ frames per seconds with virtualdub/mod you need just neeed to select direct stream copy and save as avi. of course only vdubmod will handle ogm.
i 'll try what you suggest but when i converted .ogm i was pretty sure that it was getting converted to mpeg2. I was able then to use tmpgenc dvd author to add the menus etc.Each file was 1.5 gig. Not really into .ogm and mkv files but thought what the hell give it go .Mixed results but time is an issue with finding time just to sit down and do all the unfinished projects that keep accumuating.Think i'll have a heap to do in retirement!!!! thanks again andmerr
if its mpeg2, than that's exceptable. that uneven pixellation you mention, is it macroblocking ? macroblocking is those huge blocks, when there's not enough bitrate. on a stable encoder, it only happens if you use constant bitrate settings. its better to encode using quality mode or 2 pass. in your retirement, and watching anime, ha, you rock. the truth is, i only got involve in the a/v tech world just a year ago, still considers myself a newbie. but enough to make myself a decent encode for backups.
that makes it double for me.Even though i have been a member since 2002 i have only really been interested in the multimedia scene for about 2 years.After burning about 10000+ discs with results of 96% success i know find my self slightly bored.I have a general appreciation and like trying the newer products coming out. Didnt know you were an anime fan!!! I would surmise that the original file was corrupt as you get a picture that goes from normal to a multi colored screen and back in the space of a couple of secs once the incoding is done but is not evident in the original file? your thoughts on if its possible to fix? andmerr

shiroh do you know how i can put mkv onto dvd and play it on a dvd player. Virtualdubmod won't accept the mkv file and mkvextract won't work properly, it seperated them into realvideo files for some reason.
@h-goku so they use real and mkv. of course mkvextract will put them into .rm, cause its a realvideo. so nothing wrong there. unless you're absolutely sure its not realvideo. real and mkv is quite common. so what you can do is convert the realvideo, straight from matroska, or the demuxed real. why i'm saying this ? cause i use media player classic, it got a build in splitter, so you need at least a directshow splitter installed. virtualdubmod can't demux it, i think cause real isn't vfw, so vdubmod won't even read it, i think. there're tmpgenc like tools out there that will convert do a search real to dvd. how i will do it is through avisynth directshowsource from the demuxed mkv (cause i don't have any mkv splitter installed) and feed it to tmpgenc or in my opinion a free better mpeg2 encoder QuEnc 0.59 beta2. http://www.avisynth.org/ avisynth is a scripting tool, for a guide look at afterdawn's guide, avisynth for the scripting impaired but i think all you need to do is directshowsource("where/filename.mkv") and maybe resize it for 4:3 viewing if its not already in. bicubicresize(720,480) if the hardsubs is too low, it might got overscan by the tv, so i suggest resizing this way bicubicresize(656,448) and then add borders around it to make it 720x480 addborders(24,16,24,16) @andmerr i've seen rahxephon the movie, the best part is the added scenes
it's alright just figured it out with mkvextract. it should be an avi file and i have got it. another problem is can i convert ogg audio file to mp3.
You also need to make sure that the file isn't VFR (variable frame rate) or use the new DirectShowSource with ConvertFPS.
you can find the new directshowsource in one of the thread at doom9... there's many tools to convert ogg vorbis, http://www.rarewares.org/ wow, new updates, impulse trigger profile, gotta check out what the heck that thing does. google for dbpoweramp. you need to convert to mp2 or ac3 for dvd playback, unless you're making some uncompliant format. my player does play with mp3, but it b0rks the video.
