I have had my computer for about 3 months, i built it with some new parts + some older parts. The old CD -rw drive I have came from a gateway computer . It is a model HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B. I think it is made by LG, but that's not for sure. From the day i started using it up until a week ago, it worked fine, I was reading + writing discs all the time, no problems. Then, The cmputer stopped recognizing the CD-rw and it disappeared from the my computer fold. I went to the device manager + it says this: "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41) Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device." I tryed the troubleshooter but it didn't help. I really need help + I hope I can attain it here. Thanks in advance.
Have you tried taking the cable of boot up without the cd connected to the pc then shut down re-connect the cable and boot up as this worked for me the last time something like this happend to me if not try a new cable or try the dvd in a 2nd machine.
1st off, it's a cd-rw, not a dvd, just to clear thing up. I tryed unplugging it , restrarting it, etc..(what mitch_m said). Also, I uninstalled it + it was removed from the device manager. Then, when i plugged the ide cable back into the cd drive, windows recognizes it + fails to install it correctly. I think I have the driver on a cd that came w/ the comp. that origianlly had this cd-rw drive on it, but I cannot install the driver onto this comp. b/c i do not have any other cd drives. I think that if I could get the driver, I could do it. P.S.-I amm running xp pro and here are my comp. specs: 2.4ghz celeron D pcchips motherboard nvidia geforce4 mx-440 w/ 128mb of memory 2 sticks of 256mb ram 1-20gb hd and 1-120gb hd an austin 300 watt psu
deber0926 Get the exact model number off the unit, and do a search on the web something like this: ie; LG 1234TTy drivers, just an example... Obviously you would use the exact model number. If you find the device manufacturers website you will be able to download what you need, usually under support.
1)i tried google + i couldn't find help. the lg site doesn't have a driver for this model for windows xp. + the gateway website(which i bought the original comp. that had this cd-rw drive, has the model # + stuff budidn't have a driver for it.The original comp had xp home.my comp. now has xp pro but it has worked on the exact system i am currently using before. 2) ide2 or secondary connector?? ummm, i really don't know what that means but the ide is plugged into the motherboard + it is next to the ide that goes to the hd's and the cable that goes to the floppy drive. 3) i tried changing the ide cable + testing it but nothing changed, i don't think the IDE cable is to blame. 4) I hope all this helps
For kicks, could you post here the exact model number listed on the device and also answering ddp's question?
1)HL DT ST CD-RW GCE-8160B is the exact model # 2)the exclamation mark is only on the cd drive, not on the secondary ide controller.the secondary ide controller syas that it is working properly 3) hope this helps
read this link as it has info on code 41 & did you have roxio cd creator on your system?http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060
Just for a heads up... It looks like the drivers are all dos based and dated in 2003, so windows XP would use it's own driver. There is a firmware update for this unit but you would first have to make it work... <G> If that happens, here it is... http://www.cdfreaks.com/drive/489 firmware
what are the upperfilters + lowerfilters in the registry editor Thanks all for this help, it's almost fixed, i hope
