I am having problems getting my Dell laptop to
play DVD's. In device manager it shows my DVD Rom
    as HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-424 ON. How do I identify
what this drive is (brand wise) so I can see what
media and formats it is compatible with?
Thanks in advance for any info that anyone can
    give me.

Thanks ddp for the info. Now is there some tool or program I can use to ID this drive and compatible media?
    Thanks again.

what dell laptop do you have so can get specs on it because right now it appears you have a combo drive which is a dvd rom with cdr/rw capabilities. i checked lg site & got this info.
    24x CD-R, 24x CD-RW Write & 24x CD-ROM, 8x DVD-ROM Read for Notebook.
Can play all kinds of DVD formats and CD data.
2MB Buffer memory with buffer underrun prevention technology.

Thanks ddp. I used your information to help correct
things. I didn't have any burn program on my laptop
so installed Nero latest version which I had on another desktop. I originally had Roxio which came on my Dell 1100 Inspiron. I had to reformat my Dell and did not reload Roxio. Based on my reading in different
forums it sounds as though it's good that I didn't.
Nero does have a section to identify rom etc.. I used it and now know much more and DVD's will play.I went to Dell's site to see about updates and there is one
for firmware update. Since thigs are workng now should I update or from reading in forums only do it
if I run into future problems? Thanks again for your
replys and I look forward to future reading and learning in forums and guide sections.
