If you hate Windows Messenger as much as I do and just want to get rid of it then follow these quick steps.
Click on start/My Computer/Add or remove programs/Then select Add/Remove Windows Components off to your left hand side, then uncheck Windows Messenger at the very bottom, now select next and your all done.
Im sure msmsgs.exe will be lurking around in your task manager so if you want get ridd of it from there follow these quick steps.
Start/run (you can either type or copy and paste this in the run box) RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove press ok, and now it will ask you to restart the computer and select ok, msmsg.exe will be gone.
Have a great day!

I don't use it and don't need it and I hate seeing it in my system tray displaying its self and as I was searching the internet and it seems not to be a fan favorite. But thats my my personal thing.
Im not telling people to get rid of it im just giving a little tutorial on how to get rid of it if you don't need or want it.

if people use it thats cool, but for those who don't and want to get rid of it its a pain in the ass. Microsoft really doesn't want it uninstalled, which is why to have to fiddle with windows a little bit to disable/uninstall it
@ddp: knowing know that you use win98, messenger only pops up for outlook. but us unfortunate winxp users have to deal with the messenger running constantly in the background, along with the tray icon.

have you already disabled it? and what version of xp do you have? Every computer with XP I've dealt with has messenger running in the tray icon by default.

If you disable it then it wont show up (The icon anyway) but I bet if open task manager msmsgs.exe will be running in the background.

Quote: You may also adjust a file to "allow" you to remove other Windows components, such as MSN Messenger. Here is how:
TAKE NOTE: You will need to enable "hidden file" viewing to see the inf files.
IF YOU ARE SCARED, DO NOT MODIFY THE FILE... Also, you may experience a delay of around 30 seconds or more when loading up Outlook before you can do anything. Putting Messenger back will allow Outlook to function properly again. If you use MSN Explorer, Messenger will also be running in the background. It is how Bill is getting to the ".NET" stuff. "Software as a service" is coming soon.
Go to your Windows\inf folder. The default is ~ c:\windows\inf
edit the file called "sysoc.inf"
Remove the reference of "hide" in this line:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
To make it look like this:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
You may also remove all references to "hide" in all of the other lines as long as you KEEP the commas. Some components you cannot "uncheck" in the add/remove programs GUI. If you do get them to uninstall, I do NOT support it. You are on your own.
Source : Don't remember
Edit: Use Add and Remove Programs afterwards.

There's also a great and brilliant guy named Steve Gibson who has products to 'clean' up the bombs in Microsoft's OS. I've been using them for years - Shoot the messenger, Dcombobulator and Unplug n Pray. They're free and fantastically reliable. I use them for large network projects, as well, cleaning up installs before ghosting them for distribution.
Go here, http://www.grc.com/default.htm and download what Steve calls the 'Three Musketeers' of must haves, and shoot the messenger will plug this security hole.
So, more curious? Check out your ports on your broadband connection and determine if your heiney is hanging out there exposed to the bad*sses by using ShieldsUp! and Leaktest. You might be surprised.
Cheers...Aa

Hey guys, I have a problem; and I was wondering if you could help me fix it. I'm posting it here; because it's sort of connected.
I was cleaning my pc a while ago; and got really irritated because I was always having problems on long download runs; that messenger kept causing the system to crash about every 36 hours, without logging in, and without ever actually being used. So I removed it with disablemessenger.exe. Which is apparently popular; and ever since then, I've been noticing programs that don't work:
-Rose Online
-City of Heroes
-mIRC
-Guild Wars
-Battlefield 2(With and w/o expansion, and yes it's the full 1.3 patch)
And these are just the ones that I've noticed. So my question is, do any of you know how to get it BACK after using disablemessenger.exe? I hate it; but since removing it, things have not been good.
