Hey there, I would like to know If you replace the factory X-box DVD drive with another DVD-Rom (such as NEC or Samsung), would that be able to Read CD-R/RWs and DVD +-R/RWs? My box does not have a modchip, yet!!!.
nope! Its a firmware issue, other drives arent compatible (albiet rare examples such as the no longer manufactured samsung 616, but even that needs the sdg-605 firmware) so youre answer is, no sorry. But if you wanna read cd's in your xbox use a samsung sdg-605 (xbox dvd drive) reads 99% of em
Is the samsung sdg-605 drive the standard DVD drive that comes w/ the X-box? That Hitachi LG drive is just like the Thompson Drive!! The dvd tray cutout is identical to that of the Thompson drive, plus it doesn't read cd-r. I'm pretty sure it sucks then!! I wonder how it would work with a firmware update??
