Okay. It has been my experience that cable companies will rip you off if they can (Belkin, Monster Cable). My question is this: does anyone know of any reasonable difference between a $60 Sony iLink cable, a $30 Belkin and a $6 one I can by from my local electronics retailer? In addition, from what I have read online, it looks like I need a Male-Male 6pin to 4pin in order to connect my Sony DVR-HC42 docking bay to my computer, is this correct?
    Thanks in advance.

No, there is no difference in functionality of various brands. There maybe some differences between the quality of the connectors, but the cable either works or does not. For cables that have to transmit analog signals things like shieding, impedance etc. come into play, but this is not the case for a Firewire cable.
For the type of connector you need on both ends, just look at your camera and your PC.. ;-)
