Just the basic stuff. Open the PC and check for a loose power connection. Maybe swap the power plug to the drive with another one if you have an extra one inside. Keep your fingers crossed its that simple.

    hmmm,checked for any kinks,loose connections,but seems ok

dont want to mess around to much,as it still under warranty, but you know how long these things take to get fixed, thought i might beable to fix it myself.

    regards hursty

Hey Hursty :) Just found this thread.

No matter what, the DVD-ROM should show life once the power connector is hooked up, with or without an IDE cable connected so start with a power issue first. Like Jerry said, if you switched the 4 pin power lead to it, and still nothing, (even at boot up the tray should be able to open and close,) then it has to be the power connection of the drive itself or possibly a built in fuse. What happens when you wiggle the power lead to it, notice anything at all? Do you try to push in all the power lead pins in the drive one at a time to see if they are loose from a power pin plug removal? You can remove the IDE cable to make sure that this has nothing to do with a power up issue as well.

Just give them a call and most likely they will ask you to walk thru it with them, then do an RMA with you. These ROM's are cheap anyway so no big deal to them. :)

thats the bummer at the minute, the warranty is not in my name, got to wait about 2 wks, thats why i changed it to my old drive that i had lying around, but have had not much with that either, for some reason the bloody thing will only read about 50 % of my disc's types, and i cant seem to find a new firmaware upgrade

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/175426

what i have noticed is that more and more issues keep cropping up with mention of windows xp sp2,thats what i have,
i was thinking about uninstalling it

I have three PC's and one Laptop with SP2 and no problems. I would hold off before doing something that might cause even more problems down the road. All you seem to have is one dead DVD-ROM drive that would be dead in any OS out there and another drive that needs a firmware upgrade. These are not SP2 issues. :)
