Problem with Sony DRX 710UL

    I posted this in the "newbie" forum, thinking that's where it belonged, but I got no takers there.

    I have a Toshiba Tecra S1 with a built-in DVD burner. It's slow and -R only, so I bought a Sony DRX 710UL, expecting a great increase in speed.

    The first DVD I made worked fine on the set top box. I'd used a DVD+R that had been around for a while. It wrote at (I believe) 2x.

    Then I popped in an 8x DVD and produced a DVD that the set top box could not read, another computer could not read, and the DRX 710UL could not read.

    Before I made the first 8X DVD, a message from either the drive or the application I was using said that a region had not been set and that not setting a region would cause problems. So I set the region (US/Canada).

    I've burned several additional DVD+Rs (Fuji and Verbatim) with various programs (DVD Shrink and DVD43, Nero, DVD Decrypter, 1Click DVD Copy, and NTI CD & DVD Maker). So far, all I have to show for my efforts is 6 hours of wasted time and a stack of coasters.

    The Nero system information and disk test all report no problems. ASPI is installed and running properly. The Tecra is a 1.1(or thereabouts)GHz system with 1GB of RAM and USB2 (no Firewire).

    I see that there is a firmware upgrade for this drive, but I've seen some reports of serious problems if that is installed. I haven't yet downloaded or installed it.

    Obviously, I'm doing something wrong. But what?

    I've got the 710A Your not going to burn dvd movies on this drive at 16X. I've tried it the quality sucks. Maybe the new firmware will help. I got it just have not put it in yet. I've found on this drive Verbatum (MCC003) +R 8X, works great burned at 6X. Also unless the firmware helps the quality on -R disks are very bad. Most people you find will recommend burning at 4X becouse settop boxes are picky with media. I can tell ya it does make a diffrence the disks i burned at 12 and 16X would not play, 4X-8X played.

    - from my experience with the (internal) predecessor to the 710 (i bought the DRU-700A just a week before the 710 was on sale in UK), it should burn -R 100%. i concede i havne't burnt a single +R on my drive, but that's only cus i started out with -R and don't have issues with playback on anything i've used - PS2, half a dozen different standalones etc). I would look at book typing one of your burnt +R discs... hang on i'll find my previous post on this ....

    Never said I could not burn -R. I was saying the quality is not as good as +R. You can check it out here. http://cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=10957

    I just installed new firmware I'll let you know if it helps with quality of burns on +R and -R.

    I tried Verbatum 8X-R before firmware upgrade the drive would not even reconize it. Will test it tonight with -R.

    Thanks for all the good info. In violation of every testing procedure in the book, I made many changes:

    1-Downloaded and installed the firmware.
    2-Reduced writing speed to 4x.
    3-Bought a different brand (+R and -R) DVDs (Memorex).

    After 5 tests (3 +R and 2 -R) here are the results:

    One -R DVD seemed to be generally OK.

    The second -R DVD has serious problems -- frequent (sometimes several per minute, sometimes several minutes between) freezes that last anywhere from 1-2 seconds to more than 15 seconds.

    All three +R DVDs are reasonably good. One has a few momentary pauses. Not perfect, but acceptable.

    Later, I'll test the Verbatim DVDs that had a 100% failure rate when I recorded them at 8x. (Interestingly, Sony lists the Verbatim DVDs as "certified" for this drive, but not the Memorex DVDs.)

    verbatim's are fine for the Sony (remember it's a rebadged Lite-On). ditch those memorex tho...
    you're getting there, hopefully at the end of this you'll have movies that don't skip at all. I personally won't tolerate a single skip in my disks as the amount i burn i could potentially have many crap films. I'm doing about 10 today alone....but i digress, my guinness is getting warm!

    Hi

    I have the SONY DRX-700UL, external model.

    I seem to have quite a few problems burning media with this model. I use DVD Shrink and Nero - I get quite a few coasters, particularly with DVD -R.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

    we need info - post your last section of the Nero log, remember to edit out the serial number first, its about the 3rd line down beginning with 1A21- or similar

    Thanks for the reply - so where do I find the Nero log? I'm not actually sure what part of Nero is used for burning the DVD as its intergrated into Shrink isn't it? As in Nero came bundled with the writer but Shrink automatically starts it for the burn process?

    sorry forgot to tell ya - mine is in "D:\Program Files\ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log"

    as for your other question i believe Shrink uses the installed Nero. You can always untick the setting in Shrink and manually burn using Nero or whatever you want..

    I've always burned at 4x ... except with my Plextor 716 (I burn at 8x). Verbatim media +R

    @sandpaper, some ppl out there might steal your serial number;

    plus, from your log - your DMA is off, also you're using CMC media (you'll hear cries of 'the worst there is' i'm afraid)

    i haven't checked on your firmware rev, it's a very new drive but we can look at that after.

    I just bought a new DRX 720A and I can only burn at 2X, tried higher and quality was bad(dvd freezes up, jerking, etc.), is this normal?

    XP, 2.4 GHz, 512MB Ram, Sony DVD+R 1X-8X

    Use DVD Shrink and Clonecd 1.3.10.1. Have nero but havent figured out how to use it yet, is it better than Clonecd?

    @bblinn,

    DMA won't affect your Sony since it's an external drive. Is your Toshiba using USB 1.1 or 2.0?

    It's 2.0. I think the primary problem was crappy media burned too fast. Now that I'm using Verbatim 8x media and burning at 4x, all seems to be working (reasonably) well.
