both with or without stacking ring are the same quality

they put them in tapewrap to save money (save your stacking rings and use them over, thats what i do)

I have a fresh question not on dvds:

I have some backup to do which should be archival quality to cd media
via ISO. Is there any particular archival quality TY or other cd media
designed to be stored for along time and also be hardened against repeated usage?

I guess I want to burn in the burn-in.

donewell - now you've got me :)
i've never bothered to find out, it's never been on my "can i be bothered to find out" list, i simply googled for it when i saw the thread had been updated..
i always thought the stacking ring (with regards to spindles) was the foam or whatever spacer you find in a spindle of blank dvd's at the top of the stack

@ creaky
Thanks again for answering. I just got a bad batch of verbatums 16x -mcc-004 's and i never had bad ones before, so i was looking to order some ty's, I've never used them before so this ring stuff confused me, I just wanted to find out which are best. I guess it doen't mater. Just seams to me if they don't have this spacer ring to keep them apart, as it looks like that is what it is for. Then what keeps them from scratching them selves in shiping and handling?

Ran some burned media tests from my Magnavox DVD recorder. It doesn't like (poor scan results) 16x Verbatim or 16x Ritek. On the other hand it likes 16x Sony, 8x Verbatim plus 8x Tayio Yuden. And it loved 4x Verbatim until I couldn't find any more.

I just ordered a 100 pack of 16x TY & I'll find out if the recorder burns it well or not. Either way my computer's DVD burner has no problems with any media that I normally use.

For those that use a standalone DVD recorder, what brands (speeds too) have you tried with it & which ones does it like plus not like?

Can standalone DVD recorders have their burners flashed with updated firmware? If not, can the burner be taken out of the enclosure and flashed by a pc? Don't own one but curious!

bratcher I'm sorry I can't remember where you are from. States? If so you should be able to find something in the 4x arena. We can help if need be, find some media that is. ;)

Unfortunately I don't own a standalone DVD recorder so my advice is heresay. :S

From the info that I've gathered most of the DVD recorders seem to like the 4x or 8x media. I think the reason for this is the speed at which the recorder records: 1X !!! I've noticed that most of the newer media, namely 16X variety, doesn't like to be recorded at 1x. hth...

garmoon I was thinking the same thing. Maybe someone knows the answer. :D

A few can be flashed with a disc in the recorder but mine can't. As to PC flashing the recorders drive I haven't tried it nor do I plan to as long as I can still get media which it will burn well.

I'm from the US, Houston Texas to be exact. As to 4x media Meritline still has some Ritek 4x silver shiny available but for how long I don't know so I'll burn 8x media in the recorder until I can't get it anymore then switch to whatever 16x media it can burn well.

The only full size 4x is the Ridata.

http://www.meritline.com/ridata-4x-dvdr-r-shiny-shrink-wrap.html

As to the 8x Verb white inkjet printable I've got 200 of those plus another 200 8x TY to burn so I'm set for awhile.

Of the 6 TY media (TYG01, TYG02, TYG03, YUDEN000T01, YUDEN000T02, YUDEN000T03), which is considered the best? I have a BenQ DW1650 with firmware BCIC. Any help is always appreciated.

I haven't used YUDEN T01 or YUDEN T03..

BUT of the ones left I would say YUDEN T02 then TYG01 (if you can find them) then TYG02..

I have some burns with both T02 and TYG01 discs that are 4 years old that still scan at 95 or higher with Nero CD/DVD Speed with a Lite-On LH-20A1P. That should say something about stability!!

In all honesty all TY DVD blanks are pretty danged good. ;)

hth....

Here is a good deal on TY TG02. They are value line TYs but I have not noticed any difference between them and the premium line of TYs:

$47.09 shipped to Louisiana for 200 via FEDEX ground. I got 200 a couple of weeks ago for about $44 total when they were a better sale going on. They burn really sweet on my Pioneer 115D and Benq 1640.

I have 2 of the BenQ 1650s. They love X8 TY T02s (+Rs) and booktyped to DVD-Rom. I have managed to still have 350 of the Sony TY T02s left. They also like VerbX16 +R. You'll have trouble finding TY T02s tho.

Congradulations ZoSoIV, on becoming an addict, AGAIN. I knew they couldn't keep a good man down.

Speaking of docTY, has anyone talked to him, lately?

Later, George
