i have a Dell 4700 and it came with the Phillips 8631 drive. After many, many problems, Dell finally relented and sent me a BenQ 1620 which has been perfect - no complaints about it all. Dell didn't ask me to send the 8631 back (they probably didn't want to throw it in the garbage themselves i guess) so i still have it. Is there some other firmware that I could try to flash the 8631 with so it could work? Right now, the 8631 will read cd's but not dvd's and I am basically using it as a cd-rom drive now. I am hoping that there is some way to get the 8631 to work. If anyone has tried to flash it with another firmware and if that has worked, I would love to know.

It's a POS. If it don't work, it won't work. I don't think I've read about anybody fixing the drive. Only fix I've seen is to replace the drive.

In addition to what Flip said, Dell trusted you enough to send you a new drive. Don't breach that trust. Throw the sucker in the trash.

Okay, off the soap box, now.
