Is this a true statement? Will you actually be able to play against people all over the world for FREE? Is there some sort of catch to this statement?

Are you saying that ps3 will have Halo or something? And what will the requirements be to connect to ps3 live?

No doubt they will (atleast) continue to offer online play through developers like they did for the PS2. Personally, I think they need some type of Live service and I really doubt it would be free.

I know for a fact that the PS3 will use bluetooth wireless setup for online. Not really sure about PS3 online being free, more of an offline person to be honest so it doesn't really bother me that much.I will say this though,it would be hard to hook an HDD to the system and transfer from the system to the PC.

Who said I play against the computer ;)?I play against my friends all the time in Madden and so forth.I just don't like online to be honest, because my connection sucks. If I had a decent connection maybe I would consider online a factor.

Now ps3 with a live service would be great. Alot better than their broadband service with the ps2.

i play games on ps2 online and its fine
dont have to pay anything so its good, if i had to pay however id be a bit mad. you get a few server problesm with the companies, and they tend to take ages to fix, because there not being paid
also if your not playing the top games it can be like waiting for a bus sometimes...

Do you guys think that Ps3 might have two versions of online play kind of like the xbox 360 that will have both free xbox live and subscribed online xbox live?
Peace out!

How does online PS2 play work right now? Are people connected to central servers that HOST the games? Or are people connected to servers that list other players' PS2 machines that are currently hosting online games (like Counter-Strike and Steam).
I actually have never tried to play my PS2 online. I only got the PS2 because I got burned out on playing online fps games, and wanted to play more racing games and RPGs.

servers i believe
i have to connect to an EA sports server to play games made by them
you have to create a new log on for each games company which can be annoying and would lead me to believe your connecting to different servers

It lists games for the most part (exceptions like FFXI). Right now, the PS2 has left everything up to the developer, so to play online, you connect to a developer match making service (Like Steam) that lists other people online.
It then (Depending on game and/or developer) allows you to connect to another PS2. While it is free, it's a pain in the ass. You have to sign up for each individual developer and they can implement things however they want... Tracking friends to play with, finding good games, etc... are all based upon what the developer feels like implimenting... Some are good (like SOCOM) and some are bad.

You cant connect to the old XBOX the same way? I saw in the store today a hookup that you can just connect to your modem or router so i was guessing i could just hook my XBOX up to my high-speed cable modem to get online. Am i wrong do you have to pay for it?

Ah, so lemme see if I can summarize it correctly :
Every game has a hardcoded place that it goes to, to connect to the developer's servers, and then the developer's servers lists online play according to however they want a particular game to function, whether it be on servers, or individual PS2s, or whatever, right?

I think online gaming for the PS3 must remain free, it will bring more people into the gaming market and encourage more software sales for sony.
I think pay-for-play has been around because the software devolpers have been able to get away with it so far. Sony are a huge operation, and i cant see the justification of a TAX to play online.
Cheers!
Stupid Disc! lol :o)
