How about we speculate a little about how PS3 backups will work.

I think that the immediate beginnings of PS3 backups will be hard drive based. Seeing as no one actually has a blu-ray reader/burner yet, it's probable that the first backups will be dumps from the console to a hard drive, very much the same way that Gamecubers and Dreamcast people had to do theirs.

I say this because I don't think Blu-Ray will catch on immediately. Just like DVD burners took a while to catch on, I predict that Blu-Ray will have it even harder.

The only applications that blu-ray has is for high-storage media, and the only high storage that's wanted is super high resolution movies. That's why I think companies will keep on making DVDs until the day that people DEMAND Blu-Rays.

Also, think of the industry. The industry giants are going to be all over this technology, and they'll probably make their own format to compete against it. So, it's too early to tell anyways.

I think that lot of future games will be DVD-Rips. If a boot disc can be made (which may or may not happen) the first and probably most popular thing to happen will be DVD5 rips. Because I seriously doubt that the games will be gigantic due to anything more than super hi-res movies. Just look at Xenosaga. If you rip all the movies out of those games, it boils down to a DVD5 rip no problem.

Anyways, the first tools will probably be movie/sound/music rippers, and this'll help accomplish rips for that system.

Back to Blu-Ray, I think Sony purposely chose this media simply to keep amateurs (like all of us here) from having an easy time backing up the games.

Finally, if Blu-Ray ever catches on, it'll be because of Hollywood. People will shell out money for Blu-Ray players, for super hi-res movies, just like they did with DVDs. This is specuation only. Who knows what could really happen.

But I think Sony has us beat. It won't be as easy in the future, at least not for another 5 years.

I have a lot more info, but no time to write it, so let's just discuss this, as it's probably something we're ALL wondering about.

Actually, both PHILIPS and PIONEER already had stated that their new next generation DVD Burner will support BLU RAY media format. yeah ture, u will only be able to back up at first on a hard drive btu if blu-ray dissc are 50 gb there is no point in buying a hadr drive cause even if you forked out the money which woudl be alot for liek a 500 gb hard drive that si only 10 games. just liek double laeyr dvds are to much now blu-ray will also go down in price. they have already talkign about blu-ray burners so i dont think they'll be expensive but the discs will.

Yes, Sony has officially said that ALL games will have support for HDTV. I think they said something like 720p at the minimum, but yeah, they definitely plan to make developers churn out games at higher resolutions.

is 720p better than 1080i?
is it really noticable to the naked eye?

Yeah... this is great news indeed. I gotta agree with you, and YES.... I will end up buying one from them - money wise is not an issue for me, but on the other hand, I would love to play some back up too. Apparently, now that Philips and Pioneer are getting ready to launch their next dvd burner generation that will support to record Blu-Ray format, it sure is looking prominent to me. However, now all we need to worry about is the "cracking and modifications" method for that newly vicious PS3 that's all.

Anyways, security features are always something that developers falsely pride themselves on. I'm sure once enough information is gathered, our brilliant communities will have a plan of attack ready by the time the console launches.

You know how I've said piracy groups nowadays are lacking, the true titles will emerge when this new console comes out, as all the lamers who DVD Decrypt and distro over networks will be completely oveshadowed by brilliant people who are actually able to crack.

But yeah, the info on the Blu-Ray is some pretty neat stuff.
I say we all wait for people to work out solutions before we go out and buy first generation burners.

Pirates have their own testers, so we shouldn't have to do that for them, for us, we just need to wait, let them work it out, and then propagate the info to everyone we can. That's what we do :)

One thing about this HDTV thing I'm worried about is that it'll do nothing at all on my TV screens, I have a nice 32" widescreen TV, but not a HDTV. I know some say you don't need a HDTV to see the difference, but I think you do.

It's be a LONG time before HDTV are mainstream in the UK.

BTW, does can a projector mimic HDTV reasonably, or do you get HD projectors?
