DVD Player can't play DVD-R

I just had home movies from 8 mm film put onto a DVD-R by a firm that specializes in that. Unfortunately, my new MAC dual 1.25 "mirrored doors" with Superdrive cannot see any data on that DVD, and DVD player cannot see any Video_TS files and cannot play the movies. The company says only to use a home DVD player with "S" video out to record to "S" video in on my computer and to then reburn the DVD on my MAC. Does anyone know how I can read and possibly copy this DVD-R with my existing setup? If I cannot, then is there any additional software for the MAC that would let me play the movie and possibly copy it? Thanks for any help - Ted
