i have a dell dimension 4550 xp the most obvious way to transfer footage is to buy a firewire card for pc \ it says in the manual4-pin but im not to confident tinkering with the innards of my pc the other way is buying a dvd recorder with either i link or by the coloured jacks you use to put em on video . is there any other ways my pc is only a few feet away from tv are their any adapters i could use thanks
There is no reason for that. It is a real simple operation. If uncertain, go to an electronics shop that will do it for you. The coloured jacks are analog connections. A bit of a shame to do that. If you go that road use iLink. What do you mean? Anyway, I would definitely go for a Firewire connection on your PC, unless you have no plans whatever to edit your footage.
ill go the 1394 route then if ive a spare pci bay , ive put in a video card in my old pacbell so i should be ok , can i use nero for basic editing . thanks for the info.

ive put in the firewire card and its showing in the device manager as working properly , yet its not detecting my camcorder il keep working on it might be cable
When you connect your camcorder, make sure it is in playback mode (also referred to as VCR-mode on many models). Start one of these very simple but effective freeware capture programs (like DVIO or WinDV) to test. Here's a collection: http://www.digitalvideoclub.com/downloads/freedownloads.php
samsung vp-d101 and it works fine from analogue coloured jacks on my tv just not recognised on my computer. yet in device manager gives me the make of firewire so imust have fitted them ok. bought cam on ebay so i dont think im entitled to support i appreciate your help with this
There has been very long thread over here about problems with Firewire http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/142580 Unfortunately it never reulted in any satisfactory answers. Personally I know IEEE1394 technology as very reliable and the first thing that I would test is: 1. Try the camcorder on another PC 2. Try another camcorder on the same PC This will at least tell you whether it is a PC or a camcorder problem.
ive bought a dvd recorder yet only managed to record it from the coloured jacks on to dvdrw+ to produce a dvd through my nero package it converted the files but when i tried to edit they wouldent play just froze when i pressed play. the recorder as a 4pin dv jack my camcorder also has 4 pin unfortunately my cable as a six pin at one end and 4 at the other . my question is can you get a 4 to 4 cable if youve understood any of this thanks
