novadrago, you're getting the same results as me.
When you press New Game, you get a black screen and you can only see the radar, right?
That's what happens to me.
If you had HDAdvance, that would be easy. Supposedly you activate Mode 2 and that's it (at least that's what they say). But if I activate Mode 2, the game doesn't run at all. This is so frustrating...

Can I ask you something?
How did you manage to read the second layer? did you just open Apache 2.0 and it just popped up?
How did you make the ISO? with DVD Decrypter?
Do you have a Dual Layer DVD Burner in your computer? What brand?

novadrago. if you dont have a tv capable of displaying 60hz/ntsc you will have trouble. if you change the video mode to PAL, you get issues with sound. ok if you now have something that will boot to main menu and browse mem card screen , then it could be as simple as trying different media. for reference purposes it might be worth your while to try a verbatim DVD+R . also you are using dvd-. typically the dvd- minus format is not ideal for doing rebuilds. i know from experience cos ive tried lots of different media. the ps2 reads the + format much better and with the case of this game the quality of the media is paramount.
it might not sound like much but i urge to switch to the + media, verbatim or similar quality. you would be surpised how much of a difference it can make.

I don't think it's the media. I'm running it from the Hard Drive and I have the same problem. The game runs but it's having trouble reading the second layer.

sorry xenoph i didnt mean that applied to you. your situation is different to novadrago as you simply cant read the second layer period. and running from the hard drive is very different than running with swap magic. my point is im using swap magic 3.6 and so is novadrago. the process works for me but not for him, the only different factor between us is the media so in the interest of helping him to get the game to work im suggesting he try good quality format dvd+r's. i tried all kinds of media with my rebuild and the DVD+R from verbatim was the only one that gave me something playable. i think its worth a shot.

I was referring to novadrago's problem as well.
What I meant to say is that I'm using the HD and it crashes at the same point than him.
Since my problem is that i don't have access to the files in the second layer, I think he also has problem accessing those files too. Since he is using single-layered dvds, i'd say it's a problem with the location of the files in the disc.

But that's just my oppinion.

Of course, if it's just a matter of burning with different media, great, so i'd give it a try.

Raiden300 are you sure it will work once I used verbatim DVD+R the reason being that I do not want to use any money if not needed but as long as it works I don't care how much I need to spend.

So before taking this route is there anything I can do to burn this game successfully without buying verbatim disks. Like arrange the file tree?

Anyway you told me to burn with verbatim disk, do I need to burn your file tree iso which gave a blank screen once booted or my experimental file tree which gave me a loading screen with the main menu and the memory card screen etc but freezes on the new game screen.

novadrago can you answer my questions about how you accessed the files in the second layer?

No using Apache 2.0 input the iso by going to file, open file. Then on the left hand side is a disk probably saying NO_LABEL if you are doing xenosaga as well. Then right click it extract all to a new folder, name it XENO. The extraction will take a while it took me about 15 minutes. After completion right click NO_LABEL again, this time clicking switch layers. Now switch layers is the second layer of the dual layer disk then extract all again to XENO and you should now have both layer files.

I made an iso with DVD Decrypter by going to mode, iso , read then select the location of my iso then the dvd to hard drive button. I was able to do this because I had the original copy of the disk but since I live in the UK I couldnt play it.

No I do not have a dual layer burner.

xenoph. the whole point of this guide in the first place is to do away with the second layer. that is why apache2 is used , to extract the files from layer1 and layer2 and then the ripkit applies the necessary patches and re-assembles the files so they can be burned to single layer dvd's.you dont need any dual layer dvds, or a dual layer dvd burner to do this guide. in your situation your apache2 cant read the second layer and extract the files. novadrago does not have that problem, his apache2 extracts the second layer fine. as he detailed in his post.

novadrago. in response to your verbatim question. it is a known fact that the ps2 does not read the dvd- format as well as dvd+. i am speaking from experience as when i started backing up games i was using the dvd- and had lots of trouble with certain games, when i switched to using dvd+ format the difference was staggering, not only in the amount of games that now worked, but the quality of the backups also.

in the case of xenosaga we are patching and rebuilding a game that was never designed to be split up, so using the best media possible is crucial. In my honest opinion and speaking from experience you will get better results if you switch to dvd+ . if you cant get verbatim check the best media thread in the forum, any of the dvd+ discs listed there should do the job. i tried two different types of dvd- media when i did my backup and i got the same results as you, freezing at main menu or just a blank screen.

and given the nature of this backup i do not think you will ever get a working game if you stick with using the dvd- format.

i honestly believe because your situation is so similiar to mine, and your experience and results with the dvd- is exactly what i had , if you switch to dvd+ you will get a working game.

OK I decided. I already ordered some verbatim DVD+R disks now lets just hope the game boots.

Raiden300 do you think I should use your file tree or mine to burn the game, or with both.

Hello all, this is my first post here

I wanted to thank you, Raiden, for putting this guide up at the precise point in time that I started trying to figure out how to backup Xenosaga to play it on my PAL PS2. It is typical that one of the two non-PAL games (Suikoden 3 being the other) that I wanted to play would be one of the few that cannot be backed up simply.

However, with the help of your guide, I managed to get everything up and running in the same night that I installed my fliptop and tried Swap Magic for the first time.

I thought I'd also add my experinces of burning Xenosaga because it doesn't seem that anyone else has posted a success story.

I have an NEC 3540A and a model 4 PS2. I tried burning with both TDK DVD-R 1-8X and Sony DVD+R 1-8X. For some strange reason which I don't quite understand, the TDK media had Taiyo Yuden's Media code on them (TYG02), but either way, both Xenosaga and a PAL game I burned to double check did not work with -R media. I then updated my firmware and all the other tweaks in Paddymail's checklist, and then burnt the first disc on my Sony +R - it worked fine. I used DVDDecrypter for all my burning.

I did not have to rearrange the file tree or anything like that, just followed the ripkit. also, I was slightly concerned that my burner does not allow Bitsetting (at leasnt not on the official firmware) but this does not seem to have been a problem.

so to cut a long story short, thanks for saving me hours of searching for guides on the web!

Muchos appreciatos
Paul

Raiden300 my verbatim disks arrived today. DVD+R 4.7 gigs. I started from scratch and followed all your instructions. Only to find out that it was exactly the same as before. So what do you think I should do now?

@novadrago

I'm working on a "fresh guide with pictures" for references at the moment and I'll be posting, uploading or adding "XENOSAGA Episode 1" with my "Easy method to rebuild PS2 games, including GRAN TURISMO 4 and 50CENT BULLETPROOF" later on. So far, I can confirmed that both disc 1 and disc 2 are working. If all of the results turns out as what I've hope, then I'll be sure to add into my "GT4 guide" for sure.

My tree is totally different from Raiden300 and I can confirmed that it works 100%, YES... I have Swap Magic 3.6 Plus and Fliptop. The only reason I want to backup XENOSAGA Episode 1 is because my son loves to play this game dearly and I don't want him to trash/scratch up his original that's all.

I'm doing something little different that what "raiden300" did. However, I still use the RipKit 3 discs (sad, the ripkit's instructions can be complicated and hard to follow). And YES.... you will lose your mind trying to backup XENOSAGA Episode 1 (US version, 7.88GB). I must admitted XENOSAGA is not a joke, it required a lot of times and hard drive spaces (my recommendation is 25GB - 30GB of free space).

**NOTE: my method/solution is that I have to rebuild the ISO TWICE, YES... 2 times rebuilding from scratch and the already rebuilt (I've discovered that doing this way, it works better because the ISO was trimmed and even if I'm backing up using top notch media like YUDEN000T02 aka 8X DVD+R Taiyo Yuden (made in Japan) it will freeze at certain spots/scenes for a few seconds when XENOSAGA is loading. With that being said, I come up with an idea and I decided to rebuild them TWICE and burned it, plus "book typing" them into DVD-ROM format and presto... it works like a charm. YES... it will work 100% flawlessly.

In addition, my "rebuilding tree" is totally different from both the "ripkit and raiden300". Keep an eye on my guide soon.

@raiden300

I'm glad there's someone out there that is willing to sacrifice his times trying to help Newbies or other members that needed helps when the consequences arise. Glad you've got it all sorted out with your mini guide. I appreciated your times and efforts.

It is people like you and I (nah... I ain't that good, I have more knowledge in ripping and burning dvd movies) or some other knowledgeable memebers that this forum needed in order to stay healthy. Keep up the good work!!

thanks alkohol. like i said Xenosaga is such a difficult backup other file trees and tricks could work. could you please post your disc1 file tree for novadrago, id hate it if he missed out on this game after all this. novadrago i reccomend trying what alkohol did and rebuild your disc 1 iso twice. while i didnt need to do that, some other backups i have done required two rebuilds.

Raiden300 I too agree with alkohol. You are a very friendly person, I can see you have tried your best to help me and not only that you actually spent time helping me think things through. Thank you for that.

Anyway alkohol can you please post the guide for disk 1 please as I am dying to play this game. Your help will be appreciated.

Never mind that question, sorry.
But I have a new question:

So I'm going to start all from the beginning since I created my Xenosaga ISO File with DVD Decrypter,Img burn, etc.. Resulting in a xenosaga iso file from 4,1 Giga. Anyways, I think I did something wrong because when I want to start with your guide and when I want to switch layers it says something like: "Double DVD layers can not be read on something else than a DVD 9 ISO".
So I checked my Xenosaga ISO from before and the last file was xenosaga.13 . So how exactly do i burn this into a good ISO Starting from the beginning ?

ok what has happened here is dvd decryptor can only read single layer dvds so when you made the iso with dvd decryptor it only read the layer 1 files.
what you need to do is pop your xenosaga original disc into the dvd drive, and then open apache2 . select the dvd rom drive, and you should see the contents of the dvd . now extract the contents of both layers to your hard drive as i have detailed in the guide in step 3.

When I'm trying to open the files with Apache 2 from the D-drive It can only read the IOP map. I can't see the other files on it, but I know the other files are on it. What to do now ?

Sorry to bother you once more, but I can't get apache 3 working. I can't find the 'Switch Layers' option because when I right click on the 'NO_LABEL' title nothing happens.

This is what happened when I tried switching layers with Apache 2:
http://photobucket.com/albums/v655/gtArandomidiot/?action=view¤t=...

And this is how my version of Apache 3 looks like:
(I got it from backuptools.co.uk that included the update version, but I also couldn't find the 'switch layers' option on it.)
http://photobucket.com/albums/v655/gtArandomidiot/?action=view¤t=...

So how exactly does apache 3 work and where did you get your copy of it ?
