thanks Mik3h,

I had a go with it. Your right with turning them both of them anti-clockwise. I did so with both until they both fell to the bottom, and then raised them at the same time. They were originally aligned at the same height as each other (as I found out when they both reached the marked points at the same time).

I was hoping that recalibrating the laser was going to fix my mod chip problem...but to no avail. My games still skip and stutter on some of the movies (and in FIFA 06, the commentary is always delayed). That still could be a laser problem however.

The actual problem I've always had, is that the modchip would only start working if I banged around the PS2 a bit. Otherwise I'd get that red screen saying "insert a PS2 formatted disc". I've got a feeling there is a dry solder joint somewhere...just cant see it. Don't trust myself to resolder the joints either...

Oh well, hopefully I can recalibrate the laser to stop the stuttering...just gotta bang it around everytime I wanna check it...this will be painful.

Thanks again. Awsome guide!

What media are you using for the games and movies? Also, you possibly have a fake chip, what chip is it? The re-aligning is mainly for when nothing will boot up.

If it is a dry solder joint, then I reccomend taking it to a professional solderer, if you are not comfortable with doing it!

it was supposed to be a Magic 5, but I knew I got screwed by the guys that did it, so i cracked it open and found it to be something different. It's a Magic 5 clone....a shit clone at that. Couldn't tell you exactly what it was (was a while ago), but yeah, it's never worked properly.

I think your right though, i should just bring it to some duds I trust and get them to take a look.

thanks again.

EDIT: sorry, and the Media is TDK ...frig, gotta check the model number. But I've always used TDK...I'm fairly sure it's not the media....but when i really think about it now.... hmmm...

Well it'd be good idea to eliminate the media as the cause before paying to get a new chip installed. TDK's aren't the greatest, try getting some Taiyo Yuden's or Verbatim's. If it doesn't work then it's probably the chip. Read my modchip FAQ to make an informed decision if you do decide to get another chip.

5. Q. What modchip should I get?
A. Matrix Infinity (Green Dot), DMS 4 Pro SE, or the Crystal Chip 1.1.

What's the Media ID of those HP discs? Even money they code out as CMC Mag. Trying everything would include using good media. It definitely sounds like a crap media problem.

91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...
Last but not least you can use DVD Info Pro: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
Compare the Media ID to this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

If those are your two choices, go with Sony. Even the Made in Taiwan Sony's are decent. If you can find some Made in Japan Sony's, they could code out as Taiyo Yuden's.

i used the method described earlier in this thread. Is it the method that doesnt work? I heard of another way to do it- by downloading the dvd5 rip file on swapmagicfix.com and burning it on 2 seperate discs but id ont know how to do that. can anyone help? and if i were to split it on two dvd5s would i still need a high quality blank dvd???
(I bought a new pack of blanks, maxell dvd+r 8x, and the method described on this thread still didnt work!! I have the same black screen problem! My last hope is buying sony dvds.)

Always use quality media with the PS2. The situation is irrelevant, you should never use budget media with the PS2. The PS2 laser is a lot more sensitive than your typical stand alone DVD player. Hence it needs to be babied with good media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. You can use that two disc method of backing MGS2, but I believe that simply moves the movies to one layer and the game to another, in that case you'd need to swap it out everytime there's a cut sequence. That's only gonna fly if you're using a modchip. High End modchips like the DMS 4 Pro and Matrix Infinity support DL backups, so no rebuilding is necessary. So basically it's worthless unless you're using a modchip that doesn't support DVD-9 games. I'm not 100% on this, it may work with Swap Magic. Look around for more complete info. Here's the two disc method: http://www.freewebs.com/mybackups/MetalGearSolid2Substance.zip

If the game requires you swap disc every cutscene then chances are it will be impossible to use with Swap Magic. Apparentlya new version of SM will support DL discs, so no problems should arise if you had a modchip supporting them.

PS, Thanks again Tokijyn, I'm actually surprised at how many times it is said, sometimes people just don't pick up on the fact, regardless of how many times it is said, that quality media is needed!

Well if you answered as many posts where faulty media is the number one problem as we did, you would say that over and over too. At first I said that because it's what everybody else said, now I say that because I know it from personal experience. Quality media is the number one key to successful burning.

i think evrybody knows that now but i dont know if this was a flook or something but i burned res 4 on a cheap tesco DVD-R disc and it played perfectly. Then i tried it on the allmight taiyo yuden disc and it stalled then i used my fantastic sony discs and got the same results as the tesco disc but i binned the tesco disc just incase something went wrong and when will the next version of swap magic be available(with dual layer support) so i can finally play mgs2 substance.

No everybody doesn't know that. If they did, I wouldn't be an AD addict. I don't know how "fantastic" those Sony's Made in India are. It was probably a case of user error or media incompatibility with your writer. Did you ever scan any of those Sony discs with Nero CD/DVD Speed? I'm not trying to hassle you, but your posts could be very misleading to a noob. Try posting some scans of those discs with CD/DVD Speed.

93. Q. How can I tell if my burned disc is of good quality?
A. Well besides you using quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's, you can use a program called Nero CD/DVD Speed to measure the quality of your discs. It measures POF, PIF and gives your disc a quality score based largely on it's precoreded Media ID. In my experience that's the key component to getting a good quality score. A crap manufacturer like CMC Mag won't maintain a great quality score over time, even if you follow all the advice given on AD for successful burning. You don't need to know exactly what PIF's and POF's are, just know the more of them, the more likely your disc will skip, lag, freeze, or not boot at all. When people say CMC Mag or Memorex media is crap, that info is based largely on many Nero CD/DVD Speed scans by burn enthusiaists on CMC Mag media that have yielded terrible quality scores. Try it yourself and see. You can find Nero CD/DVD Speed here: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html Plextor DVD Burners aren't compatible with Nero CD/DVD Speed. For their DVD Burners you need to use a program called Plextools, which does about the same thing as Nero CD/DVD Speed minus the quality score. You can find Plextools here: http://www.plextools.com/download/download.asp

or DVDInfoProYou'll want to download the free version.

Yep, you don't want to wear out you're laser with cheap media (A lesson I learnt the hard way with damn Ritek G05's.. my Verbatims kept my laser running for a good few months, now I'm left checking eBay for a good deal on a PS2 every day)

*4.3 :)

Sometimes it may need re-built to get it to work (Swap Magic Users) but other than that, not usually.

Yes. Though a single layer DVD is advertised to hold around 4.7GB's, it actually holds about 4.38GB's. The extra area is the buffer and lead in and what not.

I have a huge problem trying to rip MGS2:Substance PS2 and use it with SWAP MAGIC 3.6. I've followed the old guide step by step and the hexing guide u provided. Many thanks to that, But when i use CD/DVD GENERATOR to make the .IMS file it says "TOO SHORT LOCATION LENGTH" So then i replaced the three 1byte dummy files i recreated to the original DEMO2, STAGE2, & VOX2.DAT files, created the .IML file, used .IML2ISO then burned it with DVD Decrypter and it was no good. the game stood on the black screen after LOAD PROGRAM. PLZ HHHHEEEEEEELLLLLLPPP!
much appreciated.

U gay!
