Why not say that you liked the movie so much that you bought a copy and backed it and made a mistake in the return.

@Godzilla
I have gotten several that were cracked in half, and others that had watermarks in them and would not play. I really don't think they check what is in the envelope when returned they just run the barcode through a scanner and then reshelf and send it out, unless somone complains they have no clue, just my opinion :)

this may sound crazy but if you think about it, copying helps out these online rental places.they really don't lose money and it boost there sales.same for regular video stores to.just a thought.

My understanding is that it costs like 85˘ per movie to ship it both ways, including the envelope, people who "Copy" their movies tend to turn around lots of movies per week, hence if they turn 6 movies a week, that will equal about $21.00 per month in shipping alone, they lose money for you heavy users... Just an FYI

ckurt25- Phew ! that was a close one Buddy! The slowdown in getting your netflixx rentals does happen to heavy users ( people like us ) ! if your rent and return your disc too quickly you will soon notice that your movies start taking longer to arrive & you may see delays in getting your 1st choice on recent releases ! This is called Throttling and I believe I saw somewhere that There was a Class action lawsuit against NETFLIXX for doing this ! Might have been on Yahoo awhile back ! I also think I saw something about Netflixx suing Blockbuster for Stealing their IDEA !! Online rentals ! Can't stand a little friendly competition Netflixx ? Also on the Fair use Rule - I'n not a Entertainment Lawyer or anything but My understanding is that Yes you are allowed to make Back up copies of your Media Videotapes , CD's Cassettes ect. But Under the DMCA Digital Millenium Copyrights Act it says " You are allowed to make backups of your media However if it is encrypted ( Macrovision - or any of the other various Types of encryption ! and nearly all DVD's are And you decrypt it to copy /backup your DVD then under the DMCA ruling you have Broken the law atleast technically ! Will the MPAA /RIAA / CIA / DEA / FBI & or their black suited M-4 & Hk MP -5 toting Ninjas show up at your door & Blow your house down ? Not likely unless your Flagrant about it & are Distributing /selling them in quantity ! Like I said I'm not a lawyer or anything but that's my understanding of it ! Well Better luck & pay a little better attention next time okay ! Happy Renting LOL!!!

In cases like this if they do persue it you do what any good Lawyer worth his salt would do, you "Blame it on a VIRUS".

Ya konw the easy way out it to buy a copy, legit of course. If they knock on your door, it's a legal copy because you already own it. As for the other 100 you have around the house.... SOL I think......

If caught, get a sex change before you get sentenced to Jail/prison, that way you'll be stuck with a bunch of amorous women, better than a pound full of horney dawgs...

Actually Netflix did have a class action lawsuit..
They were guaranteeing DVD's within 1 business day and they were not living up to this thus they got sued.
Now whether it was Netflix trying to slow down the mailing due to this person ordering alot or the plaintiff was in an area with crappy mail service...who knows...

Okay my friend is a mail man, he said those cracked DVD's are from lazy mail man who do not sort them when they pick them up. the company they belong to does not always catch them when they are sent back. they need to be ran in a special sorter (this sorter decides were they dvds need to be sent) so that the dvd's do not get destroyed. The normal sorter for mail just crushes them. It also happins when they arrive in there destanation city and they are not sent to the proper machine. The reason dvd's with nexflix has slowed down is because the shipping cost when the cost of a stamp went up so did the rest of the cost for mailing. Netflix took a major hit so they slowed the sending process down. My friend told me that and I also saw it on CNN.

ckurt, I'm not surprised at the outcome. Blockbuster doesn't care. It's still embarassing though, and you should know better.
1 copied disc isn't exactly HARD EVIDENCE in the first place. Even if you were found to have a collection of copied discs, I doubt the feds would do anything to you, prosecution wise, unless they thought you were selling them.
And blockbuster sucks compared to Netflix.

Yeah I've heard of BB and NF slowing down your rentals because of renting too many. I have BB online, and sometimes I forget to send the 3 I have back and when I do, I usually get the next ones on the list faster. And then there are times when my aunt and the Legion of Minions (her kids LOL) are over and since we have like 4 TVs, those three movies end up getting watched and I return those the next day. There are times when they're over quite often, so returning the movies the next day happens a lot.
I know that if I returned a copy in the mail I'd probably freak. Then again, there have been a few times I got the right sleeve, but the wrong disc. So I don't think they check them that well :D

I work for Royal Mail, I use Amazon for renting my DVDs, I haven't received a broken dvd yet, I think your problem is either netflix or the numpties before you that rented them. I love the way people blame the Post office!

I don't think netflix throw those broken disks. You were suppose to get a free month of serive. If you were a netflix custmor when they got sued. I think it's true that if you return the dvd in 1day they do slow your process and they will think your burning them.
