AVI to MPEG

    Easy. Open the AVI with VirtualDub and select Save WAV, takes appx. 1GB of HDD space.

    I am using VD 1.3a and on a 700MB file Im getting only a 25MB file for audio, am I doing something wrong?

    Hm, that means that your audio is very likely encoded and you need to extract the audio somehow. Try few apps, like CDEx to open the WAV (it can be RIFF-WAV which means that it's actually an MP3, but in WAV structure) and saving it as an uncompressed WAV. Try also playing the file with WinAMP or similiar and see what are its properties.

    Firstly, this is my first time here, but it seems like a very nice site. I think I'm gonna be visiting more often.
    I would like to ask you one question. If I convert AVI to MPEG, will MPEG file be smaller than AVI in size?

    hunter: Only thing that I can say is "it depends" :) If you wish to create VideoCDs, which can be played with any regular DVD player, you need to use MPEG-1 format with static bitrate of 1150kbit/sec --> exactly 74min of video per one 74min CD.

    Thank you dRD. So that means that if I want to convert AVI file into MPEG and burn it on a CD for later use ( just to save some space on a hard drive),it probably wont be possible. The movies are just over 700MB big. What is the best option for me?? Do you have any suggestions? Wich way is the easiest? TY

    hunter: You _can_ do this, if you appreciate the fact that you can use the CDs with your DVD player and don't need your PC everytime you watch the movie. You just need to split the video to two discs.

    Thank you very much dRD. I thought it might be the best option, but i have never done it before. How and what do I have to do, to split the video? What software do I need to be able to do it? Thank you for your time and advise.

    hunter: Only software you need is TMPGEnc. Look at our articles section -- there's a guide for DivX to MPEG-1 -- strip the rest of the parts out of the guide if you don't need subtitles and just look for the TMPGEnc part. And some of the guides has a part about MPEG-1 file splitting as well.
