I don't think so. It asks if I want to enter a parental code, but I just got it, so unless there's one that comes turned on by default?

I just read a post somewhere else that mentioned:
"
What is the code necessary to unlock the parental control lock on the PS2 DVD player?
Press the select button and input: 7444.
"
I'll try this out later tonight and let you know how it goes.

Not sure what version PS2 I have...how do I check? Anyway, it asks if you want to set restriction level to level 8, or something along those lines. When I entered the code I referred to earlier, 7444, the copied DVD's played fine!

Okay, I was reading a few pages about Swap Magic. My DVD burner on my computer only burnd +r/rw, not -.
I've read that Swap Magic only plays -r backup DVD's. Is this really true? If that's the case, I guess I need a new DVD burner. Thanks.

ahh yes, problems using Swap Magic, I have those also, but mine are with cd-rom based ps2 games. Anyway I have a DVD+R/RW drive and I haven't had any trouble burning ps2 dvd games and playing them with swap magic.
I succesfully burned Vice City on my first time making a dvd game back-up. So I don't think the problem is Swap magic, but i could be wrong. I used DVD Decrypter the burn the dvd Back-up. Hope that helps a little.

Thanks. However, I just bought my PS2, so it's probably a newer version. First, how can I determine what version I have? If I look at the model #, it's SCPH-50001/N, SCPH-50010/N. Does anyone know if I'll be able to play copied DVD's/CD's with this version of PS2 I have?
Thanks again!

I copied a DVD and played it in my PS2 with no problems I
Used Smart ripper to decrypt the files and the used Nero recode to make the DVD and It works just find let me know if you need more help on doing it You can also E-mail me at mh249@earthlink.net
1)use Smart Ripper and chose the backup tab on the left, which will decrypt and copy all of the files to Video_Vts on your hard drive.
2) Once smart ripper is done use Nero recode (nero6.0) and select the import DVD option and select the VTS folder on the hard drive Nero will load and recode the files to make them fit on a 4.3 gig cd once Nero is done take the dvd out and play it in your PS2 or Home DVD Player.

I think what I've been finding out is that with the V7 or lower versions of PS2, you can use the flip-top cover or the slide trick and backup DVD's will work on PS2. But I think with the newer versions of PS2 (like the one I have) you need a mod chip. I haven't gotten a real honest answer on that, but it appears to be that way. Anyone else? Thanks.

It seems like I keep answering some of my own questions...anyway, here's a note regarding PS2 DVD backups and Swap Magic. This was a posting on ps2ownz on 1/19/04:
****
When the Swap Magic v3.0 USA CD initially was released, it was thought to work on ALL PS2 consoles from v1-10. However, this was found not to be the case, and the end result was that it was only compatable with v1-7 consoles leaving those in the US with more recent versions stuck using a Memory Card exploit.
However, we received confirmation from the manufacturer that the Swap Magic 3.0 USA CD discs after the initial batch run now support v9/10 consoles just like their PAL counterparts do... great news indeed for USA v9/10 owners! Shipments of the updated 3.0 USA Swap Magic discs are being distributed to resellers, so those interested in purchasing them for use on a USA v9/10 console may finally do so shortly!
******
Now we just need to find out if the flip-top covers or slide trick work on these v9 + models...

alright maybe someone can help me. I've got DVD Decrypter, I've made back-ups of a few of my games, using DVD Decrypter to rip and write the ISO images.
Vice City, no problems. Castlevania LOI, received errors after 100% completion of write phase on one try, and then another error the 2nd time around 95% completion but both discs will play in the ps2. My last try was Mafia, totally unsuccessful in the writeing phase, only got to 85% and then had an error.
I use a UN-modded PS2 with swap magic & flip-top lid.
I was looking around the web and it seem's some other people have had troubles backing up MAFIA also.
Please, any help on how to resolve this error issue I am experincing with DVD Decrypter will be greatly appreiciated. If some one could at least direct in the right place with some extensive information on DVD Decrypter and how to resolve writing error's.
Some help on burning MAFIA, if any one has done it, would also rule.

jjplapjnp, thanks for the great info about the "updated" 3.0 version of SM that works with v9 and v10 consoles. I have a v9. Do you have any recommendations as to where to buy the "updated" 3.0 version of SM? I'm also looking for a fliptop. Any recommendations. THANKS!
Thanks,

666Hate, have you tried using Nero or Alcohol 120%?
JGmhz, I went with the slide-card as opposed to the flip-top, but both and the updated version of SM can be found at mod-chip.com. I confirmed with their guys that this is definitely the updated version of SM. I ordered it last Friday and should receive it anyday now.
