Bah
I just downloaded their user guide, which is obviously newer than the literature in the box, and it says it DOES support that format (the -r -rw)
Seems you can't even trust the developers to get their shit together ;)
So hopefully, the firmware upgrade i throw at it in a few minutes will update my machine to their literature.
We were both right, and both wrong, depending on who you listen to (even Philips) :/

I take it this player is quite new? It seems ideally suited to my needs, but isn't available in the UK yet.

Mentazm - If you are in the U.K. go for the KISS DP 1000, you will not be disappointed, plays everything, even bin and cue files, jpegs but wont play mkv (Matrovska) or DigiTV mpegs. Read the reviews still on Amazon U.K. but available with quick delivery from nickknows.com

It does too play DVD-R and is supposed to play them. Mine works great with them. I put 5-8 movies on a DVD-R (I use ritek brand) and it comes up in a menue and you can select which movie is supposed to play.
Superb unit, best DVD player I have had yet!

I agree, kickass unit. And lo and behold, after I updated it (and I don't think that had anything to do with it) I retried my DVD-R's and it works fine, just takes a hella long time to start/find/get to the menu.
Big thing is, can SOMEONE get me past this QPEL pain in the butt codec problem on certain xvid.
I had a non related xvid prob yesterday where a movie had REALLY screwed up colours, I even went so far as to reburn at 8X, but by then, I'd got the faster burn working, just hadda pause it or something with the menu button, then it started to play it perfectly...Just get me past this QPEL crap and I'll buy you a beer.

I phoned up Phillips UK today. Word is this unit is only available in the US, and won't be getting shipped elsewhere for a good while yet. Guess I'm buying the KISS then :/

I jus bought this unit last night and the minute that I got home I installed right away. All my DVD's are -R, loaded with music, videos, mp3s and jpgs. They all work great. I also have a neudigit DVIX player that is also great, but this DVD player has a lot more power to it. Can somebody tell me where can I get the firmware upgrade and how to do it, thanks. Do not believe what people tell you about DVD-R and this DVD player. All my DVD-R are burned using Nero 5.5, and each DVD-R that has movies, has 6 movies at least. They all played great. My DVD-R with music videos at least contains 99 musiv videos from mpg, to m2v and SVCD, they all played awesome, only like 2 of them scracth a litle bit. My mp3 in DVD-R, also played with out a problem. The only complain that I had was not an OPEN/CLOSE buttom but reading this forum I found the solution. Any questions at manuelr77@yahoo.com

You wont need to upgrade it for a while if you have only just bought it. If you go to the kiss-technology site, you download the upgrade from them, burn it onto a cd and then play the cd in the KISS player. I presume you have the secret menu to make it all region. I got rid of those awful blue lights on the front on the unit. Dont understand why you say there is no button to open and close tray. There are only two buttons on the model and the one closest to the tray opens and closes it, plus of course the button on the remote. The one small complaint I have is that you cant switch it off from the unit, only from the remote. I also put 5 to 6 AVI movies on a dvd if I cant be bothered to convert, or a cd if it is less than 700MB. Crazy how this player was developed by KISS, a Danish company and the Divx organisation but is hard to get hold of in the U.S. The DP 450 which has the same specification as the DP 1000 is available from MTS Business Solutions, Wilmington, DE but these people seem to be a bit confused about making it region free and told a friend of mine, she would have to have it adapted, which would then make the guarantee null and void, this sounds like a load of c..p as it is so simple to make it region free. Hopefully Amazon.com will have it soon.

Hi everybody,
so I assume this unit DOES play DVD - R -RW and DVD + R + RW. I guess we reached that conclusion. Can anybody give me the web site from where to download the firmware??? How do I throw it in the unit, just burn the data to a disc?
Thanks to all!!!

The firmware is super easy to find from the Philips site. But for you lazy bums out there ;) :
Firmware file:
http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvp642_17/dvp642_17_fus_eng.zip
Firmware instructions:
http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvp642_17/dvp642_17_fur_eng.pdf
Generally, what you do, is you take the zipped file, which is usually a disc image, unzip it, and burn the image onto a disc. This is most likely a CD-ROM image. If you don't know how to burn an image to a disc, buy your local geek a six pack or RTFM regarding your CD burning software.
Once you have accomplished this, it should be just a matter of putting the disc in and letting the player reflash its firmware with the new revision.
Best regards,
-E
PS in this case it is not a disc image, but simply two files that you need to burn onto a CDR as a data disc.

Sorry to confuse everyone but I have been talking about the KISS DP 1000 or DP 450 which is only easily available in the U.K. but is coming to the U.S.

Hey,
I just bought philips dvp630/02 and everything seems to work just fine, except the subtitles. I upgraded it from the philips site and still it doesn't work. I tried .sub .srt and .txt to no avail. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Damjan

i'm pretty sure the flash upgrade only helps subs for divx titles, is that what you're trying to get going? and if so, does your cd with the AVI file on it have the /subs/ folder?

Yeah, subs for divx :) And no, the AVI file and the sub file have the same name and no folders... Why, should there be a subs folder?
Thanks,
D.

Zorc, it plays SUBS just fine. for me it plays everything, no matter if .sub, .txt or .srt and no matter if it has the same name like the movie or not...The only thing you need to do is in the initial disk menu FIRST you highlight the actual sub file... DON'T press OK button of the "navigate" group on the remote...press "SUBTITLES" button instead...it will say DIVX SUBTITLES FILE SELECTED...or something like that.. And after that you select the actual .AVI file with the movie... Later on, when the movie starts you can modify the way (actually the encoding) the SUBS are represented

Damn, it still doesn't work. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I upgraded it and nothing. Burned all the different subs extensions and nothing... On the little picture beside the sub name (on the left) there's a question mark so guess it doesn't recognize it... I'm in a desperate need of help here, folks :)

Hi Zorc-
Call me crazy, but I would suggest that the difference in operation that you're seeing is due to the fact that it's a different model... (i.e. 630 v 642) ;-)

Hey Zorc-
Well then, I don't mean to be a dick, but perhaps you should start a new thread or seek another forum where they are discussing the particular model of DVD player that you have. <snip> Oh cripes, didn't mean to be that much of a dick <snip>
Authoring DVD's is easy... When you come to the fork in the road, just make sure and take it.

OK Maybe this might help. I just bought this philips dvp642 player yesterday evening. I have roughly 600 divX movies in a several binders that had about an inch of dust on them. I was quite busy 4 years ago. I had turned to Svcd's over the last 2 years because of the Apex players and the ability to upgrade the firmware. they were really neat specially the apex 660 unit which i still have and works GREAT, because you can change the backgrounds on it. You know the big DVD video splash screen to whatever you want. I got my name and address on it so if it ever got stolen the pawn shop can say hey thats not you. ANYWAYS back to this DVP642/17 player. I bought a sony ns517p just 14 months ago because I have a 65" wide mitsubishi HD TV and I wanted a very versatile Progressive dvd player. This thing I thought was great. Well the next invention of sliced bread has got to be the philips DVP642. IT SEEMS TO PLAY EVERYTHING. Here is a list of things it will do and will NOTS:
Wills:
1. Plays DVD-r/rw dvd+r/rw
2. divX all versions.
3.Xvid +++i personally dont have many of theses
4. MP3 burnt directly to DVD.
5. mp3 on CD of course
6. multiple divX on dvd. gives you a directory
7. JPEGS. hell even lets you rotate the pics as they slide by
8. regular DVD's of course
9. Hell it played a dvd that had pics, mp3's and vcds on it. just selected what I wanted on directory
10. can upgrade firmware via CD-R (very kewl as always) never have to worry about not being able toupgrade unit.
11. plays regular retail music cd's
12. This unit is divX certified. www.divx.com/vod
13. this unit has component out for your 480p pleasure.
14. this unit has pre programmed settings for different audio settings ex. hall, studio, etc..
15 has pre programmed settings for video ex. soft, bright, normal etc. also has custom.
16. has ability to change region VIA REMOTE
17. Supposedly macrovisionfree except when transferring to dvd-recorder.
18. has a zoom to 3x and you can move arrows to move the pic around
19. Progressive scan and has beautiful Picture for DVD's
Ok heres the not so popular features.
1. divX quality lousey. VCD quality at best. I have tried 3.11 4 and divx 5.11 before and after upgrade
2. no open tray button on remote. Later found out just hold the stop button
3. 11 character titles
4. doesn't come with component cables just standard rca and a video.
5. doesn't have a movie stop memory like my sony which remembers 35 movies.
6. when forwarding through chapters display on tv just syas next without giving you a chapter number.
7. when push remote buttons sometimes you have to do it twice and hold them for a bit.
8. doesn't do dishes or clean house :(
ok folks thats about it. I would certainly recommend this and to buy a back up one.. Wal-mart in Livingston, Tx had 15 units yesterday $69.95. Don't get me wrong the divX playback is an awesome feature and took them long enough. I have several movies on divX that have not been released on DVD. Its about like watching a movie that had been recorded from tv in fast mode. you know the mode where you can get 8 hours onto a vcr tape. I like the directories for dvds because you can add all kinds of stuff and maximize you dvd space.
I just hope this last longer than my philips 24X cd burner I bought 3 years ago. They wern't the greatest.
I hope their quality has improved.

Don't know if this will work on the 630 but I have the same problem with subtitles on my 642 -- the player would not recognize the subtitle files (question mark icon shows up instead of the dialog icon). I found that if you rename the subtitle file to contain less than 12 characters, the player will recognize the subtitle. Man...now I have to reburn some of my DVDs since the subs will not work. Hopefully the next firmware will fix this.

Now all of you have me confused on whether this Phillips DVD player is even worth it. For one, anyone out there that is ripping movies to DivX format has a DVD Burner (at least a CD burner) so you know what your movies look like on your monitor. Looks GREAT!
Now you have to look at it this way, the TV standards here in the US have a resolution of 352 wide by 240 high. Your monitors that you use with your computer are just about twice that resolution on their lowest setting (640 by 480). Now think about it, viewing a movie that has been ripped to the DivX format most likely will look like crap on an old analog TV.
I don't own this product but considering it since it does have SVHS output which is supposed to give you better clarity in the video than if you use the composite or co-axial cables running to an old TV.
Hint people, by 2006 most people will be using HDTV which your computer is capable of playing right now, SO.......

a divx rip will never look quite as good as the dvd, but so what. if the picture needs to be dvd then walk your ass over to blockbuster.

I love this player and I think it makes the DivX files look just as good as possible within the limits of a NTSC monitor and the DivX codec. Not sure what the other guy was griping about.
This is the 4th DVD player I have owned (all good name brand players) and this is the best playing one by far. It deals with scratches better, plays DVD-Rs better and that it plays DivX is just a sweet bonus.
