I put the disc in - it reads it and then I put in a blank disc and it stops at somewhere around 50%. It repeatedly does this. I have checked with our department at our company and it worked once. What is happening?

Excellent, now I know what you are using!!

I've tried DVD x Copy Platinum and I think it's a very bad program,
but if you must look here:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvdxplatinum.cfm

When I want to back-up a whole disc(DVD), I always first try to rip with DVD Decrypter, then Author with any authoring software.

If you are looking for quality use DVDRebuilder and CCE

Check out the guides section here at Afterdawn, you'll find many excellent guides and the software required to do the job.

Also you may want to check out:

Well it really depends on what version your using.

Well what version are you using? Made by which company? 321Studios or DVDXSoftware?

If you want a good software, that has excellent quality and is easy to use( just punch and go), fast, and also has editing abilities get Intervideo's DvdCopy 3. You'll need a ripper like Decrypter(free) or AnyDvd(not free but will rip on the fly) and that's it. It's quality is great and it only takes an hour or less to do a movie. Cost-70.00

The only app better in quality IMHO is RB/CCE which weycraze mentioned. I don't know if I would recommend it to the beginner, and it takes about 3-4 hours to do a movie, but it's quality is 2nd to none and that's with compression ratios of 50% and higher. You also need several proggys to make it work, all of which are free except for CCE basic which costs 58.00. Installation has been made easy by Rockas' installer.
