Norton has been givin me some aggravating fits as of late. What antivirus programs do u guys (or girls) suggest I get? I've heard some good things about Nod32 and kaspersky. What ya think? Thanx.
i use avg7 free edition with free updates http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 do a search in this forum as there is a thread about the best antivirus programs
yes, ddp turned me onto avg and I've never looked back. as soon as I installed it avg found 7 viruses that norton missed, 2 were trojans! norton sucks!
i use mcafee, but the principle remains the same. a virus scanner that is out of date isn't a virus scanner. new viruses are out probably every day, hence updates for virus programs are out a few times a week. I have mine to set to auto-download new update definitions/or engine etc every night. There was even a nasty MSN Messenger virus out a while back that bypassed the URL's for all the major virus scanners on your machine, thus stopping your machine going to find updates. But even that's not enough. Over the last few years at work we have had 2 staff actually release their own home-grown viruses, the giveaway was that each time Mcafee or whoever the companies were, hadn't come across the viruses before, so they were either brand new viruses, or in our case, new as they'd been home-grown hence not known to anyone else. I used to use software firewalls but got sick of them not working so bought a new modem (well it's a router, 4port switch and firewall all built in). Just type "shields up" into google and go thru the Shields Up test, it'll show how secure or insecure your machine is
just ran that shields test program & says i'm in stealth mode but i'm also running zone alarm firewall besides a router firewall!!
Yes, I love AVG! I have AVG 7 Professional. I have tried many antivirus programs but AVG is the best. I also suggest maybe giving SRN Micro's Solo AntiVirus a try. It's also very good.
just like to thank you guys, im just scanning my system for the second time the first was with norton, no viruses found now with AVG free, 7 so far!!!! bloody norton is crap, and that was a legit copy fully subscribed with latest definitions so thanks to you all for the tips from me and my clean computer
You could give AntiVir XP a try... I used to use AVG, but too many trojans were not detected during scans even with the most up-to-date definition files. You can verify this if after a a full system scan with AVG turns out clean, then try AntiVir XP with the latest virus definition file and enabling the option of Heurstic scanning....also enable WIN32 heuristic scanning under Scan Settings...
my mcafee is set to download a new definitions file every eve about 6pm & is clever enough to retry each hour
Thanks for the AVG free site. As does creeky, I'm set to check for and download mcafee, whenever the computer is idle for more than 10 min. Is everybody that have an always on connection, and are using the ps2 firewall happy with that particular firewall?
i use nod32 and wasnt sure how safe it was so came on here looking for advice. have just googled "shields up" and ran the tests and it came back telling me my computer was "very cool" as i appear to be non existant and they couldnt get into my pc at all. which is nice )
i used norton, mcafee, panda, etc.etc. in the past, i have finally decided to stick w/ NOD32, it's very extensive and i have run many tests on it~ besides the fact that i have software firewall (sygate pro) AND behind a 4-port wireless router as well, network configured to ONLY allow MY 3 computers to have internet access (manually set those to be allowed, blocks everyone/everything else)~ can never be too safe nowadays, nothing is too excessive when it comes to security in MY opinion~ NOD32 is quite fast in scanning and it takes VERY little sys. resources too~ just adding my 2 cents here~ it works for ME, so i am happy w/ it~ since uninstalling norton and mcafee, and switching to nod32, i have noticed a SIGNIFICANT increase in my system speed; might be just me, but i have to say, it's a nice treat~
mcafee 7.x (or was it 5.x) was an awful resource hog, no matter how fast a machine i would install it on. However the new 8.x is much more lean. Good to hear there are alternatives, i use Mcafee as it's what we use at work and i VPN in to work from time to time. My router has NAT, which i'm very unfamiliar with in detail, but i get the basic gist of it.
i use bit defender and they come out with updates every day. its free too, version 7 free edition. oh, i also have kaspersky installed.
