Would it ber possible to show the names of members who are online at a given time? Some other forums I am a member show this and I always find it very useful.

The feature doesn't have any real meaning to anyone and causes tons of unnecessary database load, even in cached every 5 mins or so. It can be done -- admins do actually have a page that shows this data -- but wont be added to the site in near future. Unlike some out-of-the-box forum tools, our main goal with our in-house forum software is to deliver the pages as quickly as possible. To demonstrate this, for the last 7-10 days -- until yesterday -- the forums have been sitting on only one box as we've upgraded our other load-balanced servers meanwhile and the response times have been well under 50-100 milliseconds (==it takes less than 0.1 seconds to create the dynamic forum page) -- with 3000+ users online virtually all the time during the peak hours.
I was thinking the exact same idea. How about just having normal members of the forum with this feature to see whether they are online or offline but mods and admins are exempt but can see when we are online.
