New dvd/cd burner combo burning problems...pixelated picture

I need help badly... my gf bought me a dvd/cd burner combo.. lg gsa-4163b a few weeks ago and ive had nothing but problems since.. at first the burner wouldnt burn past 30% and with alot of fiddling and adjustments i finally got the burner to recognize and burn past 30% ( it wouldnt burn past 30% cause it would constantly error and fail during burn on nero and alcohol120% and vcdeasy)... but when i burn now (burner is set to master {2nd on cable} and cdrom {first on cable} is set to slave) and play it back in my dvd player, the entire movie is pixelated on and off throughout the movie. This happens to each of my burns when i burn mpgs, bin and cue files. I burn alot of movies using bin/cue onto a cdr or cdrw (memorex, sony and verbatim) and i cant get this to work at all. I tried burning onto a sony dvdrw and my dvd player said bad disk.

I have searched all over the net and on this site to no avail. I did go to the manufacturers website and there is a firmware upgrade but i know nothing about that and fear doing it without proper knowledge. I dont have the money to be able to take it all into the computer shop and i figure its probably a setting or something i can do myself. Can anyone give me any advice or know what i can do to fix the pixelations and get proper burns? I hear great things about this site and ive seen some pretty awesome advice from many on here.... can anyone help me?? thnx

Upgrading your firmware may not be a bad idea. But before that, maybe you could try a couple of things first:
1) burn to harddisk to see if things are o.k.
2) cover your basics, e.g. DMA set to on, lots of harddisk space, defrag, burn at lower speed (2-4x), do not multitask ...
Good luck!

 

 ... Also turn of any programs that may be running in the background ... ie anti-virus, screensaver etc...

 

thnx for replying...i have tried most of that.. I shut off the majority of my running programs... what is dma tho? and how do i burn to harddisk? do you mean a cdr an not a cdrw?

Also does anyone or yourselves know how to upgrade firmware.. it explains it on the site but im wondering if anyone has done it before and what they did? thnx so much for your replys. Ill post my results when ive tried all the advice.. thnx again

A) Setting to DMA let your burning program communicate with your system directly without having all tasks going through the CPU, thus making things much faster, and increases success rate of burning. Here's an extract from another thread on how to do it:

"Follow These Steps in WindowsXP
1) Right click the My Computer icon on the desktop and click Properties.
2) Select the Hardware page and click the Device Manager button.
3) Locate the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels, and double click on the one your hard-drive is connected to (usually the Primary IDE Channel).
4) Open the Advanced Settings page on the IDE Channel Properties window that appears.
5) Click the Transfer Mode dropdown box and select "DMA if available".
6) Click on the OK button to confirm the changes.
7) That's it, you've just enabled DMA. Depending on the number of devices you have on your system, it could be useful to do this on the Secondary IDE Controller as well, and to both devices on each of them."

B) Some burning programs (e.g. Nero) let you choose where to burn to (e.g. harddisk, DVD). If you have a choice, set it to harddisk. This gives you a chance to check the results before burning from harddisk to DVD.

 

thank you for your advice..i will definetly try that tomorrow .... i havent heard of this before even in all my other posts on this topic ...... i will let you know how it works...and if this dont work (i hope it does)... anyone else got any ideas?

 

Are you sure? When people look at the logs sent here, they'll always say, "Set DMA to on". *_*
Anyway, do post again if you still get problems.

 

this is the first time ive asked in afterdawn...ive asked at 2 other sites and got no where..... thats why i came here, cause you guys always have awesome advice.

i did the ide cable dma thing and it was already set to that....... there wasnt anything i needed to do. i just dont get it. sigh!!!!
ill try the nero thing and see how that works ( right now im just trying to burn a cdr and cdrw) ill figure out all the dvd stuff later lol..one step at a time lol)

i tried burning onto disk with everything shut off... nothing at all running... i also put a .nrg image to my desktop and tried to burn off that but with no luck.... so im still burning movies onto verbatim cdrws with pixelations......

 

Don't give up yet, try two more things:
1) Use Decrypter
2) Post a burn log.

 

Also is your IDE cable 40 wire or 80 wire? I would definately recommend updating your firmware with latest version. Are you useing dvd+r or dvd-r media? Does it play back ok on the drive you burned it on?

whats decryptor?? and how do i get it to burn to my harddrive. I tried but it didnt seem to work. it burned an image of the first one but i couldnt figure out how to play an image file..i tried mounting it in daemon tools then watchin in powerdvd with no success...

i am really leary as i stated about 3x of updating my firmware... i know nothing about it and will probably fry my new burner... thats why i was asking if anyone knew how to do it so they can walk me thru it really well....

im lookin into if its 40 or 80 wire..

and when i burned once using the dvd burner i burned onto a sony dvd-rw 120 min 4.7 gb disk... right now tho im jsut trying to burn onto a cd-r and cd-rw verbatim disk... i dont have a dvd player that plays burned dvds. only cd-rw and cd-r.

ill post an old burn log... from when i was first havin probs. I have done some changes and ticking but the basics should be there...

yes..i did shutdown alot of programs now... and i use verbatim (hence the cmc mag) ... now i did go to how i was told to turn on dmc and it was already on....?? but ill try your link...ill let you know what happens k thnx

p.s on your link... it says to uninstall???? i wasnt told to uninstall before.. is this ok?

ok i uninstalled it and it detected all my stuff again but on one it said it could not install the driver on HDC *driver not installed for this platform* *cannot install this hardware*.... and i checked my burn and its still pixelated. Above is the log....

im doing a burn right now...ill post the log after...

ok... now i did go to that link you gave me and i uninstalled and rebooted... when i go to device manager.. it is labellin the primary and secondary ide as unknown device...when i click to install drivers it says that the HDC cannot install the driver or hardware.. I shouldnt of uninstalled the..now its messed all up

Anyway, I suggested trying DVD Decrypter to check where the problem may lie. Now you seem to be saying that you've tried that, and it has burnt some sort of an image file onto your harddisk, right?

Now let me briefly explain how Decrypter works and maybe you can try again to see if you can burn:

First, download DVD Decrypter from this site. Insert your DVD and run Decrypter. Set 'source' to burner, and 'destination' to a harddisk folder. Then set 'mode' to 'file'. At this point, Decrypter should begin to analyse and show the contents of the dvd on the right window. Then just click the green arrow to burn to the harddisk folder as instructed.

Now can you try this and see how things go?

 

im not looking to burn a dvd... my posts have been about cdr-cdrw :S.. one step at a time... as it is i have no use for the dvd part of it, my standalone player doesnt recognize them

 

Oh, 1000 apologies. Your posts got me confused. Just so I would not misunderstand again, are you trying to burn DVD to VCD, or VCD to VCD? Mort81 was right, your DMA for the generic dvd-rom was still set to 'off'.

 

its not a problem..no apologies needed ..... im trying to burn a cdr-cdrw for a vcd or svcd ..... i would set my dma to on.... but when id go burn it would say off...no clue.


but anyway... WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! i got it to work..ive burned 4 successful movies with absolutely nothing wrong with them...i will edit this post later and tell you exactly what i did for those having the same problems as me..right now i dont have the time..sorry. But i promise i will let everyone know.. (by the way...it was this forum and all the links and all the help you gave me that got it working )
One thing i will say...it was the media. The verbatim datalifeplus cdrw i was using... well, they were working lol... i popped in a sony cdr and voila...... i did change a bunch of settings so it mighta contributed... i did go back and burn onto the cdrw after i had 3 successful burns on a sony cdr and again on the verbatim cdrw it was messed up (even after 3 successful burns onto sony cdr) My task now is to find a cdrw that my burner doesnt puke on lol.... thnx so much all at afterdawn...i know where the committed ppl are that want to help! (thank you a 1000 times over) wahooo!! i can now officially stop pullin my hair out lol

 

Glad to hear it dolphyn. Anytime the media you are useing is manufactured by cmc mag whether it be cd's or dvd's you are almost guaranteed to have problems especially when used for video reproduction. Good luck.

thnx mort... when i have time ill go thru all the steps i used to get where i am... but the majority of it is probably the media. I used the verbatim cdrws for about 2 yrs on my old cd burner... but with this new dvd/cd burner..it just dont like them. thnx again to all. If anyone has trouble, read this entire post and do as it says... then try a different disk ( i used a spindle of 50 sony cdr and had no problems now) if anyone needs help, ill try my best to help ( jsut reply to this post)
