No it doesn't have to be Maxtor, check this link out if you find a HD you want http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/ It is a compatibility list of HD's that work on an Xbox

I have a 300gb hard drive in my Xbox it will only read 137gb at a time. you need to make another partition to access the rest.

I think i used auto installer deluxe to do this. its been a long time ago but I think that is what i used to add the other partion to access the rest of my hard drive.

Listen, just reflash your modchip with a disk and update your bios! I have a 250 gig, and it sees every GB.

Never had a softmod...Im sure there is some way. You can for use use evox to make a f and g folder. Other then that just search on www.xbox-scene.com and click on the forum tab. They have tuns of stuff to help you there.

The basic rule of thumb when it comes to Xbox HD's is that anything above 400GB is dangerous to use, because it crashes quite often. Anything below it is fine...

I heard and experienced little different. I have noticed problems once you hit the 300gb barrier. I had a friend that when through 3 300gb HDDs and all seemed to fail. So I would stick below 300. Im at 250 and have no problems.

Well, I have personally modded 3 Xbox's w/ 400GB HD's, and have never had a problem w/ any of them. Also, I have a few buddies that use 320 and 400GB HD's, in which only one of them had a problem w/ his 400GB HD, and that was when he was pushing past the 350GB mark.

The more space you fill up on a bigger HD, especially on a 400GB HD, the more problems you will run in to. Not to mention that the latency sucks when loading a game if there is not much space on the HD left.

But I guess we all have our own experiences....

A 200-250GB HD is easily enough space for any hardcore Xbox gamer. I honestly don't even know why people want 400+GB HD's in their Xbox, as that is just INSANE!

I have one quick question Deez, what kind of HD's was your friend using? I can't believe he went through 3 of them! I think I would have threw my Xbox directly out the window if I had 3 HD's go out on me right in a row.

I agree, we all have our own experieces. I have to admit though my friend went with a Hatachi HDD instead of a Maxtor or Seagate. I guess Hitachi drives arent all that great.

btw, man Pimpdawg I have to say you should be XboxPimp because you work these boards hard. Everytime I hit the xbox section you are all over it. Good Job man.

how many posts are you at?

Yeah, I've heard good and bad things about hitachi HD's.

hahaha, I have 1390 posts on afterdawn. I try not to be on to much, but it's fun helping people through their problems. My girlfriend just gets pissed when I'm on this site though, so I usually go on it late at night.

I noticed your a Senior member now, how many posts do you have?

Im at a humble 623 posts. Yeah, I like helping people too. I learned so much from this forum when I was a n00b and I just want to return the favor. In fact, a couple months ago I was dropping at least 10-20 posts a day, but I had to tone it down a little because I been planning a wedding with my fiance, working full time, and going to summer school full time. It has been a crazy couple of months and the next few are going to be crazier. Thank God I only have one more semester to go.
