Are you getting them from the same place? If an assembly line process makes an error, they're likely to make more than one. When a person buys multiple peaces of a product, they usually come down the line in sequence. Meaning, when a DVD shop gets more than one copy of a release, if a bad press is involved, it's not surprising if there's more than one.

First off OZ is old as LOCO pointed out. What condition is the disc in, scratches, surface flaws? Running AnyDVD, do a read scan of the disc for bad sectors. Without running a background decrypter encryption shows up as a bad sector. If you don't have the software, Slysoft has a 3 week trial and DVDInfoPro is free. Disc utilities in Nero's toolkit will do the job.

Nothing negative to whine, snivvle or complain about. Used DVDInfoPro, recently, saw that I had RI4M running twice, cancelled one, continued the Rip/Burn without any further problems. Brought some more RI4M followers on board and they are happy. One new user had a problem about 5 wks ago, gave hime the benefit of what I know, via threads and input from this forum, shot him a copy of the RI4M help text, and have not heard from him since his last email that he is fat and happy with the results. Many thanks to this forum for your insight, intelligence(which may sometimes go right over this newbie's head, but it's cool:)) and patience. Have a good holiday, one and all. Okay, I'm shutting up!

If you used the 1710 installation program it would have installed the help guide. It's accessed through Start\All Programs\RipIt4Me\RipIt4MeHelp . Making the selection in the program itself links to an online site no longer available. A lot of sites are supplying only the RipIt4Me exe which isn't a full installation, though it works. The help guide would save asking a lot of questions.

I used DVD shrink to load the video_ts of the movie Transformers (2007) and I checked "deep analysis" and when deep analysis was 30% done I get the following error:

Transformer didn't cause any problems when done with updated software for handling the copy protection. Likely issues could be you're having a copy protection problem, your decryption software didn't process the source well enough, or a faulty disc. Check for prints, smudges, and scratches. Occasionally you'll get a bad press. I recommend DVDFab HD Decrypter for removing the copy protection from your source files. It's free from DVDIdle.

i didn't rip the movie though. I downloaded it from a torrent as a .avi, then used Nero to make it into a video_ts

You have a file the program can't find. Check to see if that file is in the group in your Video_TS folder. If it's not there, you got an incomplete torrent. The CRC error is because the program times out trying to find the missing file. You might try running the Video_TS files through FixVTS using FullDVD. I'm not sure if that will help or not though. In the end you may need to do the download and conversion over again.

FixVTS is a free program you may want to add to your collection. It's mainly used for processing Video_TS files for DVD compliance. It's handy, but doesn't do miracles.

Hi guys. I've read some of the guides by Scuba and others in the forums and still can't burn DVD videos. I have a dual-layer DVD burner, TDK 4.7Gb discs and TDK 8.5Gb discs. I can burn software and data, but cannot burn DVDs from iso format or their original video and audio folders. I can copy them from DVD onto my computer. I have a lot of burning software, including DVD shrink, DVD decrypter, AnyDVD, Nero and a few other ISO programs. I have tried burning from my local drive and that won't work either.

Below is an error message I recieved while trying to burn a DVD from Audio and Video folders (Vob files etc). I've also had a variety of others.

The hardware properties tab describes my burner only as a standard drive (LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1693S).

Can anyone help? Very very much appreciated.

First of all, you are using poor quality media-TDK. Buy some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden

Second, you need to uninstall Nero, using Nero Clean Tool from nero's website. http://www.nero.com/enu/support-nero7-tools-utilities.html Follow the instructions. Then do a clean install of nero 7.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? That's sort of what this problem reminds me of. Cyprusrom gave you a good list of things to check and get updated before you can say you've got a dying drive or not. In order, update the firmware, then check and see if the current TDK works. If not, try some other media, preferably something on the "good" list. I've had excellent luck with Sony +R. I even picked up some Memorex +R recently that coded out as Ricoh. Ricoh is good media. Back to the problem. Slow the burn down to 8X until you get things working. Your DVD ROM is in DMA OFF, you may want to fix that problem. If the firmware and possibly media change don't fix the problem, then your laser may be dying a slow death. The easiest way to check that out is swapping out the burner with a known good one. Check the cables first though. Anything that effects power to the drive could cause the power calibration error. The last few times I've seen that error though, it took a drive to fix it.

Hmm...maybe I should leave nero logs alone at 4 AM! :) I missed that "Power Calibration" b!#$h error!
Now, PacMan777 "gave you a good list of things to check " :)! To that, I would like to add:
Get a can of compressed air for electronics and try to clean your burner- and since you're playing at it, might as well do the entire system.
Also, is you computer plugged into a shared power supply? Itmight not get enough juice.
And, a while ago I came across a fix for the Power calibration thingiie with nero:

Curiosity question to forum! Will RI4M + Imgburn work(much less work any better) for dpad's needs? To dpad: To date, I have been able to rip and burn everything that has come out and have had an excellent burn rate with Maxells(Mgfd by Ritek). Memorex..a definite "aaaaugh!"

dpad is using x16 media, with a burner that has a firmware 2 versions behind; that most likely= fail, burner incompatible with new (and poor quality media)
power calibration error-> you don't fix that if you use imgburn instead of Nero, or Ripit4Me instead of AnyDVD or something. ImgBurn is an excellent burning free software. That would just fix the Nero messed up installation.
He has AnyDVD, is in good shape. RipIt4Me is no longer updated, cannot crack the new garbage theyput on the recent titles.
I am not sure if this is what you meant about "would it work in dpad's case"
Just as a side note, I have not had a failed burn in about 1 1/2 year...knock in wood. About 7-10 burns a week. But besides Maxell MIJ, Sony(Sony and TY dye) and Verbatims, my burner didn't taste anything else.

According to the ID, Memorex changed manufacturers to get the new dye. Ricohjpn was manufacturing the +R media for Memorex before they earned the "Memosux" title with the CMC Magnetics manufactured media. What a lot of people don't seem to pay attention to is that a number of other brands have also sold CMC Mag manufactured media, including Verbatim. Not long ago Ricoh started selling media in the US under their own name. It's one of the companies that's earned a good rep over the years.

Good choices on your media. Most of my burns have been on Sony +R for the past year or so. Most of what I've gotten recently was made in Taiwan. They have been working as well as the made in Japan-Taiyo Yuden manufactured Sony I've used in the past. Besides the in house Mitsubishi manufactured media, Verbatim also sells media manufactured by other companies. I've personally used DVDs IDed as Ricohjpn and TY (besides the MCC). I've heard of, but not used Verbatim manufactured by CMC Magnetics (of Memosux fame). Of my entire video library, Ricoh and Sony are the predominant manufactures of the DVDs used for backups.

The good Memorex I picked up recently was by mistake. I was looking for some CMC to see if they'd improved since my previous encounter (some time back). It was a surprise when I found Memorex had switched back to a good manufacturer. I don't know what the current mix is as far as manufacturers and Memorex sales. I just know "Wally World" has some good Memorex in the supply system.

As for RipIt4Me, it still does a good job on most movies, there's only a few that it can't do. Only the releases with something different catch it. One recent release added brackets to the title, which breaks standard syntax rules for structure. RI4M wouldn't do it in Wizard, but would if done in 1-Click. It wouldn't do it if tried in Wizard and then opened in 1-Click. Go figure. I had some fun with that one. I remember doing it, I forget which title though. May have been some of that seasonal "cheer". LOL I also did one movie in Wizard that 1-Click couldn't handle. I most always try 1-Click mode first. Of all the movies out there, there's only a few that RI4M can't do.

I think I got your drift on the ImgBurn question and I believe cyprusrom touched on it. This doesn't appear to be a software connected issue with the burner ware. If it had been, switching Nero out with Imgburn could be a fix. I can verify that Nero 8 doesn't auto burn with Shrink. But like a bunch of programs, you can save to the hard drive and use the burner from there. So, no one should expect Nero 8 to be a Shrink supported burner, but they can use Nero to burn the output manually.

I forgot who asked the question about Nero burning automatically with Shrink. If you have Nero and install Shrink, the default settings will be for Shrink to use Nero. You don't have to set it manually (though it's a good idea to check drive settings if you have dual burners like I do). If you want things changed from the default settings, you have to go into the settings to change things manually.

A PC stuck in a smoking environment is bad news because of the sticky tar coating that gets on everything inside the housing. You might not believe some of the stuff I've seen. One PC was so gummed up, the tar and dust had clogged up the fan outlet in the power supply. On some PCs, that's the only fan moving air to cool the system. Besides overheating, the problem you're currently having (as you and cyprusrom were discussing) could be due to a smoke coating in the laser head. I doubt compressed air will blow a coating like that off (if that's the problem). Compressed air is good for regular (dry) dust that isn't glued on. Remember the CD cleaner discs? They have them for DVD players as well. I got one by Philips at "Wally's". It gives a test pattern to make sure things are working properly. You may want to give one of the cleaner discs a try. Basically, you have to go down the list and eliminate the problems that can cause a power calibration error before going to the "biggy" (a bad drive).

Yes, I remember reading somewhere about some Verbatim coded as CMC.Mag. I bought some last week on sale at OfficeMax, I was a little apprehansive, but then the Mfg.Date was 2006; never heard of CMC.Mag Verbs last year. It turned out I got MCCs.
Thinking back, I remember a while ago I bought also a 50 pack Maxells MIT, at a closing store near by, I think I paid $6 or something. They were made by Ritek if I remember. I had no problems with those either.
As for Memorex, I wouldn't be against trying the Ricohjpn ones, but not really sure how can you tell the difference when buying( packaging, where they are made...) For example the Verbatims made in India are MBI, as opposed to the MCC made in Taiwan.



RipIt4Me,I don't use it much, so I cannot tell much. I only used it once or twice I think about 6 months ago, just out of curiosity, playing around with it. I solely use DVDFab HD Decrypter (movie only 98% of the time).

As for cleaning the tar off the lens-some people say they used something like an alcohol damp swab and gently clean it. Don't know if I would venture sticking in anything else than what is supposed to be placed in the tray, a disc.

A long swab dampened with alcohol would work if you can get at the head for the door. We used to use special long swabs for cleaning tape deck heads, but I've not seen those available for a while.

You hit the nail on the head with the media. Usually we can't figure out which manufacturer produced a DVD until we get it home and open the pack. Even the distinctive dark purple dye used by Ricoh can't be seen until the package is opened. Some of the online media vendors will tell you which company made a particular DVD if you're ordering. Some list the info along with the other relevant info.

I have a newb question (as I am a newb)... I've spent the last 4 hrs reading all the posts on this thread and a couple of others and now think I'm more confused than b4...

I am having a problem with a dvd I bought used. It plays fine in my dvd player and also on the pc if I just want to play it in media player.

I am trying to burn Heavy Metal. Problem is when I insert the this dvd into the tray and close it. AnyDVD automatically starts as is supposed too. But it gives me an error from AnyDVD, if I bypass it and try to open the dvd with DVD Shrink I get another error. These are the error messages:

Failed to read DVD!
This could have several reasons:
1.DVD Media is dirty, you can try to clean it. (did this step)
2.DVD Media is damaged, you have to replace it. (small scratches, not many, very light)
3.Your drive is a region locked RPC2 drive, which does not allow reading of scrambled sectors from a different region and you try to read a DVD from a different region. Known drive having this problem are RICOH(plays fine, so don't think it is this)/PHILLIPS DVD Writers and Matshita/Panasonic DVD readers and writers. You can try to find a RPC1 patched firmware at http://www.rpc1.com (It plays fine)
4.Your drive is an RPC2 drive that has not yet been assigned a Region. Try to assign one, or try to find a RPC1 patched firmware at http://www.rpc1.com (checked properties of DVD and it is set to region1)

When I click "ok", open up DVD Shrink and press "Open Disc" I get this message:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and can not continue.
Failed to read file "D:\"
Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

I tried ScubaPete's suggestions, minus the vodka part..and still I get the same results...

When I went to www.rpc1.com and found their patch for my dvd re-writer, I read the warning. "We did not write these patches and make no guarantees. Using these patches may cause your DVD player to not function, even after un-installing and reinstalling drivers and devices."

So I am "afraid" to install there patch...

Any suggestions on how to fix these errors or am I just "sht out of luck"? Thanks in advance to all who post their knowledge...

If your drive needs a firmware upgrade, that is best done from the dealer's support site, either the PC manufacturer or the drive manufacturer.

Cyclic Redundancy is simply your PC being unable to read and the system timing out. You're just looking for what's causing your system to not read and time out. I'm sure you've read the causes. I've stated them many times, as have others. If your system is working okay with other DVDs, then that will tell you if the problem you're having is with the DVD you're trying to record. With AnyDVD on you can try running a DVD Read Scan looking for bad sectors (too many little unreadable spots together will stop a recording even though it may play). Players will sometimes play DVDs that can't be recorded. It could be a matter of copy protection, in that case use the free DVDFab HD Decrypter from DVDIdle to see if you can rip the files to the HDD. If you can get that done, open the files in Shrink. DVDFab won't work right with AnyDVD, so turn off the AnyDVD if you try that suggestion.

Thx PacMan777. I did go to the website for my dvd drive to see if there was any updates. I have the newest. I will try the new program you suggested. I appreciate the help. Thanks for taking the time to educate this newb...

You're welcome. Since you've been changing a few things, you may want to make a copy of a DVD you were succesful with before. If that works out, you know your system is okay and the problem would most likely be with the disk you're having the problems with (whether a physical problem or the copy protection).
