Hollywood sues a "DVD sanitizer" company

article published on 30 January, 2003

A company called ClearPlay offers currently a service that allows (paranoid...) American consumers to "sanitize" their DVD movies when they play their DVDs on their PCs. Now their plan to enter the stand-alone player market is threatened by the movie industry. The service, which costs $7.95 a month, allows users to download filters to over 300 popular DVD titles and when applied, filters ... [ read the full article ]

Fuck!

Those poor americans that have to watch all that terrible content, maybe they should get off the couch and turn off their TV. That is cheaper and alot easier than buying a DVD-player that auto-censurs stuff.
For once I´m siding with the Hollywood big-fish.

i side with hollywood on this simply because the movie was made by the writer, director, producers, etc to be a specific way

i think their machine would blow up with scarface...or make it a 4 minute movie

movies are a form of art (even crappy blockbusters) and as such should be viewed as originally released

Most of my collection would be reduced to 2 minute movies ;o)

In fact we could see which film gets the record shortest time, i.e. for removing the FUCK word, 'Beverly Hills COP II' would probably last 30 seconds with the word removed, and Eddie Murphy would disapear.

Ah, so the movie should be seen as intended eh!, So why do they cut, slice and generally fuck with it before it is sent to the U.K.? Then when it gets here our boys cut-clice and fuck with it before we see it in the cinema. Then a new lot of do gooders cut-slice and fuck with it before it goes onto DVD.

Great! :-(

Play Atari today, it won't break-down tomorrow ;-)

Censoring has gone too far, the cencoring commission has to be a bunch of fucking democrats. I can't watch tv without hearin' bitch, and that's something I don't want my little brothers hearing or saying.
Every movie now is sex oriented and lame ass kids think it's funny and ok. Some kids are now thinking it's ok to be gay, rape, steal, curse, etc..

Anyways people should have a choice to watch anything they want OR not watch anything the want, including censored movies. They have parental lock, there shouldn't be a problem with censoring then. Too many fucking morons are sueing everyone today for the stupidest reasons. This shit is getting out of hand.

Fuck Hollywood big-fish.

"and that's something I don't want my little brothers hearing or saying. "
Easy solution, don´t watch the shows.

"Some kids are now thinking it's ok to be gay"
And you´re saying it´s not Ok to be homosexual?

Exactly what I'm saying. Some people are just fucked up in the head.

Man, if you can't figure right from wrong, left or right, you got some problems.

"And you´re saying it´s not Ok to be homosexual?"
'And you´re saying it´s not Ok to kill?'
'And you´re saying it´s not Ok to steal?'
'And you´re saying it´s not Ok to lie?'

Where does it end then?

Ofcourse I´m not saying it´s alright to lie, steal or kill. But you´re talking like homosexuality is equal to murdering someone, whereas I´m OK with gay people.
But I guess opinions differ on this matter quite alot. I also think dRD would prefer us not using the site´s boards for this type of discussion, this place is about technology and other related topics.

No, no, you are getting me wrong, I know about 8 homosexualsand are cool with them all, I just know it's not right and they've even told me how confused they were, but that's besides the point.

Fact of the matter is, if someone wants to filter what they watch, this is an alternative to not watching at all. I don't know who told you that "fuck" and sex have to be seen to understand a flick; unless it's a porno.

The media companies don't care to understand half the filth they put out, if you didn't notice. It's all about the money, and anyway they can get it.

"when applied, filters will filter out... nudity, violence..." yadi yadi "... or anything else that could disturb a clean, good citizens"

^
There ain't nothin' wrong with this.

Democracy in America has failed if you can sue someone over your own stupidity, or because you just disagree, or someone does better than you.

IMHO, the age-old idea of "media is responsible of how our little Joe behaves" is bullshit. The only, and I mean only, responsibility is with the parents and how they bring their kids up with the real life -- most of the kids nowadays are OK and sensible and can think with their own brains -- even though they consume the same media the other kids do. It is the values that families teach to their kids and how do they do it and how much they feel that they're accepted within their family whatever their ideas and thoughts are. (I'm a father of one, hopefully I can avoid making the mistakes in future :-)

And yes, I side Ghostdog -- although totally non-relevant sidekick in this discussion -- in that homosexuality is not "chosen mistake" or "problem", but simply something that someone is. I accept gay marriages, gay adoption and gay priests, I have absolutely nothing against them or anyone else -- discriminating against gay people or thinking that they have "some problem" is like discriminating against people who like to have sex on kitchen table, not in the bedroom -- it's simply their choice and what they are, no one can be "taught" to be a gay, you either are or not. But anyway, everybody has their own opinions, this is just mine.

But stupid invention anyway, IMHO, you make rge decisions to rent/buy the movie when you see its cover, read the reviews and check the PG-13/R ratings -- if people would make educated choices, there wouldn't be any need to develop a DVD player that holds people's hands and tells them "ohhhhh, this is scary, shut your eyes NOW!".

Certain films rely on curse-words and the likes to create the apropriate atmosphere, if you filter out these things it becomes a different movie - or atleast a different experince.

If people have a problem with curse-words and violence, they shouldn´t watch the films or TV-shows which contain material like this.
Why would people need a filtration-device for nudity and violence? If they have a problem with it, why do they want to view films that contain such material?

One last question: Why do you think homosexuality is wrong? Is it a religious thing?

"the age-old idea of "media is responsible of how our little Joe behaves" is bullshit."

Ummmm, obviously not.

"Those poor americans that have to watch all that terrible content, maybe they should get off the couch and turn off their TV. That is cheaper and alot easier than buying a DVD-player that auto-censurs stuff."

It's all about choice, this choice does not hurt any company or industry AT ALL!

"If people have a problem with curse-words and violence, they shouldn´t watch the films or TV-shows which contain material like this."

OMFG Have you guys ever seen edited movies on a regular cable channel??? Hello? This shit's been around and used for years, just not on DVD, It's the same fuckin' thing, just different format.

If people decide to put HOTSAUCE on thier McDonalds HAMBURGER, this is wrong and they should be sued for taking what they buy and fitting it to their wants or needs? STFU

America is based on a different democratic system than Europe obviously if you believe such a simple choice should be restricted, or maybe you just don't get the damn point.

"Why do you think homosexuality is wrong? Is it a religious thing?"

Loving another man for me is not wrong. Loving another man sexually, intimately? Why don't you think this is wrong?????

If man and man weren't meant to have children or women and women, why would you support them having children and spreading homosexuality?

So in your eyes, it's ok to be bisexual, transexual, homosexual, fuck dogs, what ever gets you off, huh???

Disgusting filth.

And no I'm not religious, I have studied different religions and have found the best religion is morality.

Indeed, many movies are full of violence (verbal, physical..) and this is not normal. Violence has nothing to do with being a happy person. Unfortunately MONEY are more important to some people (the "big fish") than HAPPINESS. They do have a problem!

About sanitizing those movies: Those affected persons are really happy?.. if they get angry only for hearing "f*"? They do have a problem, too. :)

> IMHO, the age-old idea of "media is

If Joe has a strong personality, indeed, Joe remains Joe.

PS. Long live gay people. There are more women for us! ;-)

I believe that two (or how many anyone wishes to have) adult people can and should do whatever they wish to do with their lives and bodies as long as all parties participating are doing it willingly and people not related to their sexuality don't get harmed in any way. So, yes. I accept bisexuality, s/m (providing that no one is doing it unwillingly), heterosexuality, homosexuality and all other ranges of sexuality. I oppose animal and child molesting, since animals can't make decisions to have sex with other species and children can't make clear decisions when they aren't sexually or mentally mature enough.

And the claim to "spread homosexuality" shows your lack of understanding and lack of information. Homosexuality as well as all major sexual decisions in life are determined when you born -- you can act something that you aren't, but that's just like being a heterosexual and living in homosexual relationship -- or vice versa.

I don't know what the fuck your are missing about this damn article...

"I believe that two (or how many anyone wishes to have) adult people can and should do whatever they wish to do with their lives"

WTF about the way they want to watch movies????????????????????????

You crack me up man.

"Homosexuality as well as all major sexual decisions in life are determined when you born"

WTF, So when has anyone been born into homosexuality?????

You don't know that you like spaghetti when you are born, or your favorite football team.

It's a choice, not a chromosome.

You kinda pushed the discussion off-topic at first point. But the arguing over this is plain stupid, totally different opinions on things, so there can't be a real conversation over the issue anyway. So, let's drop the whole issue.

What do my eyes see, has dRD finally implemented markup?

I have a feeling that I pretty much agree with EQ on the original topic, still we debate.

As for the discussion about homosexuality - I could just reply to this: "Loving another man for me is not wrong. Loving another man sexually, intimately? Why don't you think this is wrong?????
If man and man weren't meant to have children or women and women, why would you support them having children and spreading homosexuality?
So in your eyes, it's ok to be bisexual, transexual, homosexual, fuck dogs, what ever gets you off, huh???", but i would just be saying the same things as dRD, since that is exactly how I feel.

How about a FAQ about the markup-launguage, dRD?
Some boards have different kind of implementations, and it would be cool to now which tags you could use.

This product seems to make sense since some moves just throw in obecenities to get an R rating, which all together just unnecessary and a marketing tactic. If a person wants to watch a movie without having to listen to a character spew obcenities, why not let them? It's not like they're going to take away the obcenities for those who want to hear them. Makes perfect sense to me.

I for one agree fully with the makers of that sanitzer, the F.. word is and will always remain offending. Even if the movie depicts lowlife who [mis]uses the word, it is still not a reason to blare it out aloud. If this means that Eddy Murphy for one would be obiterated, well, he is pretty vulgar as it is (i.e. the Nutty Professor et al) so good riddance.
If these "curses" are your thing, pity for you, but PLEASE allow other people who are apparently more civilized watch their movies in all dignity and without having to endure this. Everybody agrees that Steven Spielberg is a great cineast, count the curses in his movies, you probably have more fingers. Will Smith raps and even has an Emmy award WITHOUT the use of these, it is possible but it demands thinking and thus brains, something what some seem to lack, evidence many of these postings. Bottom line, if you do not want to be offended why not allow these people the option to sanitze it, does it hurt all the ones who probably do not even know the real meaning of the f... word, I do not think so.

Liberals, and conservatives; atheism, and religion, it all boils down to our upbringing, our conditioning, our influences, and experiences. This has shaped your mind set, which in return has crafted your being into all the biases which you currently have. Concerning who is right and who is wrong,...This should not be considered, because right to one is always wrong to another. So cling to your ideals and look for others who share them. We all know what is right and what is wrong; unfortunately what is right is typically the unpopular way, being straight and narrow. The easy way of the world is natural, and carnal, one filled with good intentions, but no works.

Seems more as if it's a simple choice of wether or not someone might want to watch a movie without having to listen to obcenities for any number of reasons. For example, wether or not they're offended by adult language, they may want to not expose others or children who may be within ear shot. Another example might be a movie that, aside from some adult language, might be considered acceptable for minors or the general public where obcenities are unwanted or unncessary to enjoy a movie, yet otherwise is acceptable for viewing. Many movies are able to be viewed and enjoyed by many on television networks because of such techniques that otherwise would not be able to be brought to public viewing because of this. There really is no down side to this service. If a person wants to view a movie with obcenties, simply don't use the service - end of story for them.

"...simply don't use the service" I reckon censorship will be a compulsory feature for all DVD players in a couple of years if these people succeed. I'm sure people who are offended by "the F word" or "Nudity" wouldn't be interested in such movies.

In my opinion there's too many fuckers whant to ban certain things in my country (Australia) and other countries. They caused Baise-Moi to be bannned over here even though it was legally impossible for anyone under 18 to see it.

I'm with the Hollywood big fish(for once)
