I have just purchased the Insignia DVD recorder. I'm still working on the procedures, but I have found one annoying defect with the unit. When I am trying to dub from VCS tape to DVD the unit sometimes hangs up and nothing works: the tape eject, DVD eject, not event he power button. I have to unplug the power cord and plug it back in then have to initialize another disc since the process was interrupted by the 'hangup'.
The electrical insides seem to be the problem as I have experienced a lag time of 40 seconds to up to 2 minutes from the time I push a button for one function until the unit actually does it's thing. For example when I push the eject for the DVD it seems to take a very long time for the ejection. Same for the VCS tape. I know the VCS has it's mechanical is normally slow, but this unit is VERY slow.
The process for the dubbing is a little more confusing than I had hoped for despite the 'one button' feature. The instruction book does not cover the menu options associated with the process. Guess that's why the label on the unit suggests calling their 800 number when trying out your first dubbing session.
Overall, I hope to make progress with this unit. If not, then it goes back to Best Buy.

Why don't you just buy the LiteOn LVW-5005? It's a great machine for a budget price ...
