I live in the UK and just bought a multi region Toshiba XS34 dvd recorder from multizoneav.com.
But for some reason it won't play region 1 discs from 20th Century Fox or Universal.
It plays Warner,HBO,Disney,Lions Gate etc but with Universal and Fox discs, I get a message saying incompatible region.

I realise this is a strange problem but if anyone could offer any advice on how to resolve this I'd be very grateful.

    UK here too....

Apparently (my xs34 is on order) it won't play RCE encoded discs.

Essentially - the recorder plays all regions - but RCE works by checking to see if the player/recorder will allow play of more than one region type disc. If it allows multiple regoins then the RCE protection kicks in and prevents play.

I suspect this is what is happening.

Incidentally - the 1st disc to have RCE encoding was Mel Gibson in the Patriot. This is why sometimes this is known as "Patriot" Encoding.

I would suggest that if you own the region 1 disc - then you are entitled to "back up" your disc. If you use DvdDecrypter and Nero you can overcome this RCE encoding system.

It won't play "The Simpsons seasons, The Shield seasons, Shallow Hal, Castaway and any other R1 20th Century Fox release.

Can anyone confirm if all the above titles have RCE ?.

I thought RCE was generally seen as a failed experiment and it wasn't being used nowadays.
