I just installed a 200GB maxtor hard drive in my xbox and I'm really curious of the length of life hard drives have when used in an xbox.

(Hearing the HD reading coupled with the indicator light on the X3 panel got me curious)

Well, life is pretty much the same for that HD in your Xbox as it would be if it were in a computer. I have had old computer HD's last over 10 years before I threw them out, and those were not as well made as now day's HD's. But you do still hear about HD's crapping out, so I guess it is never certain when your HD will go. It could be tomorrow, or it could be 20 years, it's hard to say.

As long as it works now, that's all that matters right :)

Thanks for the info! I guess a backedup hard drive isn't a bad idea.

Nope, it's a good idea if you ask me.

Could be today or 20 years from now like PimpDawg said....Not to scare you or anything, but i've heard nothing but horror storys about heat problems with Maxtor drives in the Xbox!! They tend to crap out relatively faster then WD or Seagate drives. Again, this can happen with any hard drive, not just Maxtor!!! Only time can tell........try not to worry about the drive failing, just enjoy it while it's working!! Later

The hard drive should be good for a long time. Just turn up the speed of your fan through the unleashx dashboard or some other dashboard or mod chip, this will keep heat related issues at a minimum. Also, never move your xbox around while it is on, this is horrible for the hard drive, especially if it is saving a gamesave or loading something. Another thing, never unplug your hard drive without turning off your xbox and removing the power cable from the xbox. If you follow those simple guidelines, you should be okay as long as you didn't get a lemon for a hard drive. The hard drive could crap out on you at anytime, but I would say it will probably last awhile.

    Great advice, Thanks!

What would you suggest to keep the fan speed on as far as % goes? Does anyone know if the external fan that hooks to the side is any good?

    Thanks again

I keep mine at the stock speed, my buddies have theirs up to 70%.

What is the stock speed? (When my xbox was chipped the fan speed was changed). Will turning it up to 70% cause it to burn out?

No, it will just make a little bit more noise.

I guess I could wear ear plugs as long as it's safer and cooler,

    Thanks for the tip.

The sound isn't that loud. It just a low hum. When you are playing a game you probably won't even notice it. You can always adjust the fan speed too if it is too much, but I doubt it will be.

You're right, I turned the fan to 60% and with the TV volume up it pretty much drowns the fan out all together.
